Pat is a native Californian: She was born in San Pedro, and grew up in Pasadena.
Ever since she can remember, she was going to go to Pomona College. Her dad, the
perennial sophomore, must have instilled the idea in her brain from day one, so
she had no doubt when she applied only to Pomona that she would be accepted. She
loved every minute of all four years. She graduated with a degree in English
Literature and the practical skills of a waitress.
Pat was married immediately after graduation to Sanford Newton, CMC ’51 and they
immediately began their family which was comprised of three girls and one boy
all in four years. While raising this brood, she began what became a non-paid
(at least in dollars) lifetime volunteer.
It really started when Pat was ten. She became a Girl Scout and learned about
service to the community. She learned to stuff envelopes for the Red Cross, a
talent she still uses today. It went from there to knocking on doors for the Red
Cross and then the Community Chest (which evolved into United Way.) With that
gang of kids, there was no way to avoid the Community Nursery School, the PTA or
being a Scout troop leader. The latter was not her cup of tea, so she became an
administrative volunteer in the local Girl Scout Council serving on various
committees as member, chairman, vice president, president. She served for five
years on the board of directors of the Girl Scouts of the USA. Simultaneously,
she was very involved in United Way in Pomona Valley and LA County. She was a
founder of the Volunteer Center of Pomona Valley, and thus served also on the
boards of the Volunteer Centers of Southern California, and the Volunteer
Centers of California.
There were various roles with Pilgrim Congregation Church, Casa Colina, Inc.,
the Pomona YWCA, the World Association of Girl Scouts and Girl Guides, the World
Foundation (of same as above), Mt. San Antonio Gardens, Pomona College Alumni
Association, a few local political activities, and the continuing roles of wife,
mother, grandmother, caregiver, dog walker, and friend. In fact, she is involved
in most of these roles today though at a somewhat slower pace.
Pat is a loyal Pomonan. She is still eager, thoughtful, and reverent, and in a
small way believes she has made a difference for her family, her community, and
particularly, in the lives of many girls around the world, and thus, to Pomona
College. She feels blessed to have had the opportunity to travel this road and
is looking forward to serving on the Alumni Board and being challenged by the
work ahead.
