Non-Pomona Programs

Non-Pomona Programs are study abroad programs that have not been pre-approved by the SAC. These programs are available to students whose academic needs are not met by the existing slate of Pomona Programs. In order to apply for a Non-Pomona Program, students must first petition the SAC for approval. Pomona requires a 10.0 GPA minimum for Non-Pomona Programs. Additionally, students should complete the appropriate college-level language study in preparation for the proposed program, if that language is taught at The Claremont Colleges. Students are expected to complete a content course related to the study abroad destination.

All Pomona College study abroad policies and procedures outlined in this guide apply to students who participate in Non-Pomona Programs, except as noted below.

Petition & Application Procedures
Before petitioning for a Non-Pomona Program, students should consult with their faculty advisor, and an advising session with the OSA director or assistant director is required. Students then submit a Petition to Apply for a Non-Pomona Program to the SAC, due in the OSA approximately two weeks before the regular application deadline.

It is the responsibility of the student to present compelling academic reasons for the choice of program. The SAC will consider appropriateness of the proposed curriculum to the student's total program at Pomona College, and the administrative feasibility of the program. Students should show that no Pomona Programs meet their academic needs. The petition should be fully developed and well-argued.

Students whose petitions are successful must submit a completed Pomona application and appropriate program sponsor application by the application deadline. An approved Petition to Apply is not a guarantee that the student's application will be accepted by either the SAC or the program sponsor.

Normally, competition will occur since the SAC sets a guideline for the number of students who may participate in Non-Pomona Program each semester. The guideline is currently ten students. Students whose Non-Pomona Petitions are unsuccessful may file an application for a Pomona program by the application deadline.

If a student believes there are grounds for an appeal on the SAC's decision on the proposed Non-Pomona Program, s/he must meet with the Director of Study Abroad within one week. As with appeals of the SAC's application decisions, appeals of the SAC's Non-Pomona Petition decisions will be considered only in the case of 1) demonstrated administrative error, or 2) an extraordinary change in circumstances, normally beyond the student's control. The committee's decision is final.
