Academic department offices and faculty offices are provided with computers and
printers. Upgrades and replacement are accomplished on an as-needed basis.
Finally, a special program exists for significant innovation in instructional
technology.
|
| Faculty Office Computers |
| |
- The College provides one computer per faculty
member. Currently, all computers 3 years old or older will be
replaced. Faculty will be notified in the spring if they are due
for a new computer. Special, earlier replacements will be
considered on a case-by-case basis. Purchase and installation of
new computers and upgrades are accomplished in the new fiscal year (after
July 1). New computers are equipped with a "standard package"; any upgrades
from this level must be made using department
funds or external grants. Any additions (unless easily removed and
replaced by "standard package" features) become part of the
College-owned computer.
- The College provides one printer per faculty member on full-time,
tenure-track appointment. When a printer is no longer working
properly because it is too old or simply broken, faculty should notify ITS for
replacement. Peripherals (scanners, etc.)
should be requested in the annual department Equipment and
Alteration (E&A) budget process. Another possibility is that these
needs could be met via external grants.
- Software needs must be met via department operating budgets or
via external grants.

| New Faculty Computers |
| |
New faculty members on permanent appointments will be provided a
"standard package" computer, office software, and an inkjet printer when they
start at Pomona College. Again, any upgrade from the standard package must be
financed from another source and will become part of the College owned computer.

Academic Department Office Computers |
| |
-
The College provides one computer per Administrative Assistant.
Currently, all computers 3 years old or older will be replaced.
Administrative Assistants will be notified in the spring if they
are due to receive a new computer. The funds available support
only our "standard package" computers; any upgrades from the
standard package must come from department funds, but will become
part of the College-owned computer.
-
The College provides one printer per Administrative Assistant.
Printers will be replaced as needed, as determined by ITS.
Administrative Assistants will be notified in the spring if they
are due to receive a new printer. Peripherals (scanners, etc.)
requests, for both the department and individual faculty members
in departments, should be part of the department's Equipment and
Alterations (E&A) budget request. An individual's need for a
peripheral should be weighed against the common need of such a
device in a department. Please note that E&A requests from
departments must be prioritized.
-
Software (beyond the basic office software provided with a new
computer) must come from department operating expense. If you
anticipate a need for software, establish a budget line for this
category and justify your need.

Hahn Fund for Innovation |
 |
A fund exists to support innovative use of computer technology for instructional
purposes. A general call is made to all faculty in the spring for work that will
be completed over the summer. After consulting with Assistant Dean Kristin
Fossum
as well as an Instructional Technologist from ITS, a
proposal describing the features of the project, coupled with the costs, should be submitted to
Assistant Dean Fossum. Other proposals may be submitted to her during the course of the year, but approval
will depend, in part, on the size of the endowment of the fund.
