| Sabbatical Leaves |
| |
Sabbatical leaves are opportunities for faculty members on
continuing appointments to further their development as teachers and
scholars, benefiting themselves and the College. Therefore, faculty
should take advantage of sabbaticals on a regular basis and should
apply for a sabbatical leave only if they anticipate returning to
the College. Eligibility to apply for a sabbatical leave is a
function of rank and of semesters spent in full-time service to the
College. It is currently the practice for all faculty, upon
completion of six years of teaching at the College at the rank of
Assistant Professor or above, to take a leave for research or other
scholarly activity on one of the following plans:
- every seventh year, for one semester on full salary or for one
year on half salary;
- every seventh semester, for one semester on half salary, for
faculty members whose research is at a point where a leave can be
especially productive. The precise timing of a leave with respect
to the pursuit of a scholarly project is, therefore, of special
significance in granting a seventh semester sabbatical. In the application,
the faculty member must explain why a seventh semester sabbatical
leave is appropriate. Faculty will not be penalized for taking a seventh
semester sabbatical later than the seventh semester if such a delayed
leave accommodates departmental needs;
- during the fourth year of the six-year probationary period,
for junior faculty members on tenure-track. See the Faculty
Handbook for a complete description of eligibility. This Junior Leave
Program, sponsored by the Steele Foundation, provides a full year
sabbatical leave at full pay.

| Leaves Without
Pay |
| |
Leaves without pay may be granted for faculty members who have special
opportunities for research or study and whose absence will not adversely
affect their department. Leave without pay for a semester or a year may
be requested without regard to rank or term of service, but no combination
of sabbatical leaves and leaves without pay can exceed two years of
continuous absence. Please realize that during a leave without pay, a faculty member breaks
financial ties with the College. Except under special circumstance
described in the Faculty Handbook,
the College will assume no responsibility for a faculty member's benefit
payments and faculty members are not eligible for research or travel
support from the College.
|
| General |
| |
Sabbatical leaves count toward the date of consideration for tenure
and promotion to full professor, but leaves without pay normally delay
these considerations. Faculty members are required to be in full-time
service at least two years between any two periods of leave.
|
| Sabbatical Subventions |
| |
Faculty members applying for sabbatical subventions and junior
faculty applying for Steele sabbatical leaves are required to seek
outside support from at least two sources, and others are strongly
encouraged to do so. Feedback on applications to outside funding
agencies can yield helpful advice from colleagues and lead to
refinement of the leave project. In the letter requesting
sabbatical salary subvention or Steele Leave, faculty should
identify the two external sources to which they have applied. This
letter is due in the office of the Associate Dean by October 25,
2007. The Associate Dean’s office can provide assistance in
locating funding sources
and making applications. |
