A limited number of opportunities to work confidentially, one-on-one with a teaching
consultant from the outside are available. The consultant we have
been using is T. J. Mueller,
formerly of the Harvey Mudd College Biology Department. Mr. Mueller
describes his services as follows:
Dr. T. J. Mueller is a teaching consultant who has worked with
faculty all over Claremont and in many disciplines. He is a neutral,
experienced and confidential observer of classroom pedagogy who can assist you
to improve your students' learning through more productive classroom
discussions, active learning, inquiry-based learning or just better lectures.
His "teaching coaching" is individualized. He will listen to your concerns
and help you identify and implement classroom techniques that fit your subject
and teaching style.
Typically the consultant will sit in on a class and then have a
discussion with the faculty member. This exchange of teaching ideas with
an experienced teacher may result in changes in the course and further visits by
the consultant. The discussions between the consultant and the faculty member
are confidential and only for the benefit of the faculty member. Mr.
Mueller is especially interested in exploring alternatives to the lecture
method. If you are interested in this program, you may contact Mr. Mueller
directly at tj@tjmueller.com or contact
Assistant Dean Kristin Fossum for further information.
