Born
to Ride the Waves is a musical based on the life of Tom Mulroy '68, written
by his brother Joe Mulroy. Following the show, Tom himself will be joining us
for a reception in the Maddy Room, located in the same building, from 4:30-6
p.m. We will also be joined by some of Tom's family including his sister Julie
Mulroy '70, son Michael '10 and younger brother Joe who wrote the musical.
When asked to comment on big brother Tom's influence, Joe commented:
When I was around 11 yrs old Tom showed me some rock and blues chord
progressions and licks on the guitar. He loaned me his Telecaster and amp for a
long period, which allowed me to from a surf combo in 6th grade and enter the
Battle of the Bands judged by Dick Dale, "King of the Surf Guitar". A couple of
years later Tom taught me the basics of surfing at San O. Tom had a couple of
Phil Edwards-designed Hobie boards, which were made in Dana Point, which factors
into the story of my musical. In our garage Tom taught me how to patch dings
using some really nasty chemicals that may have caused some brain damage in both
of us.
So I'd say Tom had some influence.
The main character is named after surfers Tom Mulroy, Tom Morey, Tom Blake, and
Tommy Zahn.
From the Huntington Beach Playhouse brochure:
Over Labor Day weekend, 1964, the last days of an idyllic California Point
Break, confirmed loner and champion surfer Tom Bannick finds his carefree world
suddenly challenged by love and a demolition crew. Inspired by Dana Point's
colorful past and featuring songs from Surfstory, which the LA Times
hailed as "fresh, inspired, elegant, engaging and blissfully unpretentious."
This is a family friendly show, but in the spirit of full disclosure the author
says, "There are words in the lyrics like 'butt', 'boobs,' and 'bitchen.' There
is mock drinking, mock brawling, mock pissbombs, mock mooning, and mock comic
humping. There might be one 'asshole' in the dialog. Kids love the show cause
it's cool except for a yucky kiss or two."
Please use your own judgment if this is appropriate for your child(ren) before
you purchase tickets! In consideration of others, please no children under age
5.
The cost for this event is $20 per person and includes a ticket to the
performance as well as the reception. Space
is limited and registration is required. To RSVP, please
register online
or call 909-621-8110 by Sunday, June 29, 2008. |
