From Hwaet to Phat: a Brief
History of the English Language |
Alumni Association |
|
- What: |
Pomona
College alumni, parents, and friends are invited to hear English Professor Meg
Worley's educational and entertaining talk on the history of the English language. |
|
- When: |
Monday, May 12, 2008 ~ 7-9 p.m. |
|
- Where: |
The Seneca Hotel
200 East Chestnut Street
Chicago, IL |
|
-Details |
English
began when the Angles, Saxons and Jutes migrated to Britain from Northern Europe
in the 5th Century. Since then, the language has been gradually changing -- and
sometimes not so gradually -- according to the familiar principle of "Reduce,
Re-Use & Recycle." While we won't have time to cover every linguistic shift, we
will take a look at some of the more interesting and entertaining examples of
language change across the 1600 years of English. Along the way, we'll also
discuss some of the forces that work against language evolution, such as
spelling rules, grammar books and plain old nostalgia.
The cost for this event is $10 per person and includes light refreshments. Space
is limited and registration is required. The registration deadline has passed. Please call 1-888-SAGEHEN
for more information. |

sensibilities.

We are
less than a decade into the new millennium, and already Pomona College is making
plans for change that will impact the College, possibly into the 22nd Century.
These changes include a new master plan for physical campus space, a new
strategic plan reflecting such issues as sustainability, and of course a new
student body every four years. How does the College maintain a vision that both
encompasses our changing world and simultaneously respects the traditions and
values that our alumni treasure? As Dean of the College for the past seven
years, historian Gary Kates has been in the unique position to both teach
current students and have an insider’s view of administrative decisions. In this
talk he will outline some foreseeable changes for Pomona College, as well as
reassure alumni that the Pomona College they know and love is very much alive
and well! Join us for an afternoon full of interesting information about the
future of Pomona College!
The cost for this event is $10 per person and includes light refreshments. Space
is limited and registration is required. To RSVP, please
