Scholarships |

Rhodes Scholarships are awarded to 32 Americans (age 18 to
24) each year for two years of study, which may be extended
to three, at the University of Oxford.
Criteria:
- Intellectual curiosity and distinction
- Scholastic attainment
- Interest in people, open-mindedness, acuity
- Record of public service and concern for others
- Leadership instincts and prospects
- Energy to use talents to the full

| Marshall
Scholarships |

Marshall Scholarships are awarded to up to 40 U.S. college
seniors, or graduates within 2.5 years of graduation, for two years of study which may be
extended to three for doctorate, at any university in the United Kingdom.
Applicants propose academic programs at two universities;
it’s advisable to look beyond Oxford, Cambridge, and London.
Criteria:
- Distinction of intellect, as evidenced by scholastic
attainments
- Distinction of character, as evidenced by activities
and achievements
- Academic achievement: 3.7 (11.1) GPA minimum (most
Marshall Scholars are nearly 4.0)
- Leadership potential
- A specific and realistic program for study in the UK
that ties in with the student’s academic preparation and
interests

| Mitchell
Scholarships |
| |
Mitchell Scholarships are awarded to 10-12 Americans (age
18-30) for one year of study, in any field at any university
in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland.
Criteria:
- Very similar to Rhodes Scholarships above
- Humanitarian interests and record of involvement (c.f.
Senator George Mitchell in whose honor this fellowship
was established).

| Gates
Cambridge |
| |
Gates Cambridge Scholarships are awarded for 1-3 years of
study at Cambridge University. About 170 awards are made
world-wide, with no set number for the U.S., although 40 or
so is
typical. Applicants (normally under age 30) may be citizens
of any country except the UK. Independent application and
admission to the University is required, unlike the three
awards listed above, in which university admission is
facilitated by the fellowship organizations.
Criteria:
- Sustained achievement in academic studies
- Strong performance in the GRE if applying for
postgraduate study
- Evidence of potential for further growth as a scholar
and citizen
- NB: Gates Foundation priorities include global
leadership in addressing problems related to health,
social equity, education, technology
