This program has been
suspended as of 2005, and is not expected to resume.
Purpose: The R. Stanton Avery China Adventure Program (formerly the Durfee American/Chinese Adventure Capital Program) supports “…people who have a personal interest related to China and the fortitude to pursue their visions…”
Programs Funded: Projects can be from three weeks to one year in length with a budget up to $25,000, and can focus on almost anything related to mainland China. Grants are not limited by academic background or achievement, or language requirements.
Eligibility: Students, faculty, staff and graduates within the past seven years of the Claremont Colleges, California Institute of the Arts, Caltech, and Occidental College are eligible.
The foundation encourages applications from people who may never before have considered
applying for fellowships or grant awards. People may apply to the program together, but each applicant’s proposal will be evaluated on its own merits.
Selection Criteria: Projects should be built around person-to-person contact with the people of mainland China. The foundation seeks creative and innovative ideas closely related to applicants’ personal interests, history, abilities and aspirations. Strong rationale for carrying out the project in China, rather than anywhere else in the world, is important. Projects directly related to academic study or career interests are not supported; priority goes to avocational or creative pursuits.
The online program brochure linked below presents clear
guidelines and six important criteria against which all
proposals are evaluated.
Application Process: Applications
are accepted on a two-year cycle: fall 2003,
2005 etc. Submit a 2-3 page letter describing the
project, explaining its personal relevance, and including
a preliminary estimated budget, itinerary, and timetable to the advisor by November 24.
The Advisor and the Graduate Fellowships Office
are happy to respond to drafts as you develop this short proposal.
Successful preliminary applicants are notified in
mid-January and invited to submit a more detailed final proposal
in about a month. Proposals must be endorsed by the College,
but there is no limit on the number sent forward. Awards are announced in
April. Winners in this cycle may begin their travel as
early as May 15 2004; travel must start by June 15 2005.
