Information Meeting
Noon- 1 pm Thursday October 16, 2008 SCC 217
Application Deadline for fall 2008 9am
Friday November 7 at Graduate Fellowships Office.
See instructions and essay prompts at bottom of this page.
Purpose:
The Downing Scholarship underwrites a one-year educational
exchange, bringing one British student to Pomona College and
sending one Pomona College senior for a Master's degree or
equivalent at University of Cambridge, living in Downing College.
Programs Funded: For the Pomona College senior, the
Scholarship funds one year of study leading to the degree of
Master of Philosophy or equivalent (e.g. Part III of the
Mathematics Tripos). Consult faculty in the field you
wish to study, read general course descriptions in the
Cambridge University graduate prospectus at
http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/gradstud/admissions/index.html,
and then go to the departmental website for details on the course of
study that interests you. See also the Downing College web site
http://www.dow.cam.ac.uk.
The Scholarship covers tuition, fees, living expenses, and
one round trip between the Scholar's home in the U.S. and London. The award
also includes an allowance for books, local travel, and
personal expenses.
Eligibility:
This is a special arrangement between Pomona College and
Downing College, and only Pomona seniors are eligible.
Graduating seniors with strong academic preparation in a subject area
for which Cambridge offers a master's degree or the
equivalent may apply. You will apply to an
academic program at Cambridge, not to Downing College.
Selection Criteria: Applicants must demonstrate solid
academic preparation in a field suitable for the pursuit of
a master's or equivalent degree at Cambridge. The
selection committee also looks for a candidate's potential
to contribute to Downing College and the ability to
represent Pomona College with distinction.
Application/Nomination Process: The internal
application requires (1) a draft of the Cambridge University application
including any supplemental material required by the program
to which you are applying; (2) two
confidential faculty references for graduate study which may be sent by email (do
not request hard copy letters at this time);
and (3) two essays, one
describing personal and intellectual interests and
attainments and another detailing the proposed academic
program. Essay prompts are available by email or hard copy from
the GFO. The deadline is in November. Award of the
Scholarship is contingent on acceptance of the Nominee's
application to the University of Cambridge program of choice, and acceptance
of the nominee as a member of Downing College.
Check the application deadline for the University program to
which you are applying, and whether supplemental materials
are required. A very few MPhils require submission by
October 15, in which case you must apply to Cambridge in
advance of our internal deadline.
If in doubt about deadlines or anything else, consult the
Graduate Fellowships Office.
Researching British
Universities may be helpful with regard to terminology
used at British universities, types of programs, available,
and related matters.
If you are applying for the
Gates Cambridge Scholarship
you will have submitted your University application to
meet that deadline, so there is no need for a new draft.
