Note:  As of March 2003 these fellowships were to be phased out over the next five years.  See http://www.hhmi.org/news/031303.html

Purpose: HHMI seeks to promote excellence in biomedical research by helping prospective researchers with exceptional promise obtain high-quality graduate education.

Programs Funded: Fellows must pursue full-time study toward the Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree in selected biological sciences. The Fellowships support training in fundamental research in a number of specified fields in biology, including neuroscience and pharmacology. Fellows are expected to conduct research and prepare the results for publication. Studies may be pursued in the U.S. or abroad (though foreign nationals must study in the U.S.). The awards provide an annual stipend of $18,000 and a $16,000 annual cost-of-education allowance paid to the institution. Awards are usually granted for three years, with a possible extension for an additional two years.

Eligibility: The fellowships are intended for students who have completed less than one year of graduate study toward M.S., Ph.D., or Sc.D. degrees in biological sciences, including students who are college seniors at the time of application. Students who hold or are pursuing medical or dental degrees may also be eligible to apply for a Fellowship in support of study toward the Ph.D. or Sc.D. The program is open to both U.S. and foreign citizens.

Selection Criteria: HHMI funds candidates who have demonstrated superior scholarship and show the greatest promise for future achievement in biological sciences and biomedical research. The Institute specifically encourages applications from women and members of minority groups underrepresented in the sciences.

Application Process: This international competition is administered by the National Research Council. Applicants are expected to apply via the Web. Program announcements and application materials are available each August, and the deadline is in November. Potential applicants should be sure to take the GRE no later than December.

See the current advisor for other science fellowships, for advice on other opportunities for people with similar interests and qualifications.
