Purpose
Established in honor of former U.S. Senator, George J. Mitchell, who served as Chairman of the peace negotiations in Northern Ireland, the goal of the Mitchell Scholarships is to interest the next generation of American leaders in the island of Ireland and its relationships with Britain and Europe.

Programs Funded
The fellowship supports study in the institutions of higher learning in Ireland (seven universities in the Republic of Ireland and the two universities in Northern Ireland) for one academic year. Awards include tuition and room and a stipend to cover other necessary expenses, plus assistance with travel costs. An additional stipend supports local travel to explore Ireland and develop an understanding of relationships between the island and its close neighbors.

Eligibility
U.S. citizens between the ages of 18-30 who will have completed a Bachelor’s degree before beginning their studies in Ireland may apply. There are no restrictions as to academic field of study except that the proposed course of study must be available at the university elected by the applicant, and the applicant's undergraduate program must provide sufficient basis for study in the proposed field.

Selection Criteria
Prospective Scholars must demonstrate a record of intellectual distinction, leadership, and extra-curricular activity, as well as personal characteristics of honesty, integrity, fairness, and unselfish service to others which indicate a potential for future leadership and contribution to society.  The small size and frequent activities of the Mitchell Scholars group makes potential to be an active and contributing member an important criterion.

Application/Nomination Process

Prospective applicants should contact the Graduate Fellowships Office or the Faculty Advisor no later than the spring of their junior year, as drafts are due during the summer.  Applicants submit a preliminary application to the Pomona College Selection Committee, which conducts screening interviews in September to determine which candidates receive official endorsement (= nomination) from Pomona College. The number of candidates Pomona may endorse is not limited.  Alumni/ae applicants are encouraged seek advice from campus, but institutional endorsement by Pomona or the applicant's current graduate school is required only for full-time students.

Internal Application
The deadline for the internal application is June 16, 2008. You may download the Internal Application in Microsoft Word format , and email it to Paula Goldsmid and Malkiat Johal, or you may download the internal application in adobe acrobat reader format , complete it and mail or fax it to the Graduate Fellowships Office.  Potential applicants are encouraged to look into the other British fellowships with similar deadlines and requirements, and to discuss the potential for multiple applications with the Faculty Advisor for British fellowships or the Graduate Fellowships Coordinator.
