NIH- Oxford and Cambridge Scholars in Biomedical Research
NIH-Cambridge Health Sciences Research Scholars
Purpose: These programs provide an
opportunity for
students to pursue collaborative biomedical research
projects between a laboratory at the National Institutes
of Health and either Oxford or Cambridge University in
the UK,
leading to a Ph.D. from that university.
Programs Funded: Students are fully funded for
tuition, college fees, health insurance, and stipend. A
laptop computer and generous travel allowance are also
included. Financial support is available for
students desiring to complete combined MD-PhD degrees
through this program. Students spend about half of
their time at the NIH campus and the other half at
Oxford or Cambridge, where they are members of colleges
and participate fully in university life.
Eligibility: Exceptional American students who
have not yet begun graduate study or who are currently
in medical school may apply. Marshall and Rhodes
Scholars may also apply to participate in this program.
Selection Criteria: U.S. citizens and
permanent residents who demonstrate utstanding academic
achievement in relevant fields (average GPA = 3.9 on a 4
point scale) and promise of research achievement at a very
high level should apply. UK citizens who have
completed at least two years of graduate work at one of the
affiliated universities may apply as advanced scholars.
Application/Nomination Process: See the
websites below for details. The application
deadline is usually in January, with interviews at NIH
in February and March. Selection is completed by the end
of March. See
Cambridge NIH - Frequently Asked Questions for
a good unofficial description of the process and related
