Academic Procedures Committee
The Academic Procedures Committee is a standing committee of the Faculty charged with reviewing and acting on student petitions for exceptions to academic policy and procedures.
The Committee assumes in its deliberations that the Faculty’s academic rules and regulations ensure the quality that marks a Pomona College education. A petition should not be presented to the Committee on the basis of a fundamental disagreement with a rule or regulation. The Committee is empowered by the Faculty to make exceptions to policies when justified by unforeseeable or extraordinary circumstances.
^ Top
Before You Decide to Petition Can you make a convincing case why an exception should be made for you? You need to think through carefully why a rule which applies to others should be waived for you, and argue that point convincingly in the statement of your petition.
^ Top
What Should Your Petition Include? Your petition should address all relevant questions the Committee could be expected to ask in its deliberations. You must present compelling educational justification for requesting an exception to policy. Or, if a missed deadline is the issue, you must describe the circumstances beyond your control that made meeting the deadline impossible. For example, if you are petitioning to add a course long after the add deadline has passed, why did you delay?
You must include all relevant supporting material, such as medical verification. It is your responsibility to present your case fully. The Committee will not make assumptions in your favor when information necessary to support your case is missing.
Your instructor and adviser must sign each page of your petition. (Adviser signature is not required for petitions to change final exam date or time.)
^ Top
When Should Your Petition Be Filed? The APC meets once a week during the semester and does not meet after the last day of classes. Submit your petition to the Office of the Registrar. The deadline for a completed petition to be considered by the APC is two working days before the weekly meeting; i.e., by
noon on Thursday. Petitions received after that time will be reviewed at the next APC meeting. Petitions which are not complete will not be accepted by the Registrar.
^ Top
What Should You Do After Filing? Until you receive notification of the Committee’s decision, take no action which may adversely affect your status in a course. Keep going to class. You and all other signers of the petition will receive a notice of the Committee decision via campus mail.

Advanced Placement and
International Baccalaureate Exam Credit Effective for students admitted Fall 2004 or later.
Students are granted one full credit for any Advanced Placement or
International Baccalaureate Higher Level Exam on which an appropriate score has
been earned (for AP, a score of 4 or 5; for IB, a score of 6 or 7. Other
equivalent exams, such as the Swiss matura or the British A-levels, are
also available for one credit, when completed with an equivalent score). Credit
is not granted for exams which duplicate each other, such as AP and IB English
Literature. If a course is taken that is equivalent to an advanced standing exam
(equivalency defined by the department in question) no credit for the exam will
be given. There is no limit to the amount of advanced standing credit that may
be accrued through AP or IB exams, but credit received for advanced standing
does not supersede the College’s 30-course rule.
Effective for students admitted Fall 2008 or later.
Same as above, except that students are granted one-half credit for
appropriate scores on exams for semester-long Advanced Placement courses.

CMC Internship Program
Students who participate in the CMC Washington, D.C. internship earn up to four course credits for the semester. Grades earned in the internship program are calculated into the student’s grade point average.

Concurrent
Enrollment
Students currently enrolled at Pomona College will not be awarded transfer
credit for work completed at another college or university during the regular
semesters. Students who take an approved leave from the College may transfer
such work, subject to the restrictions described in the section on Transfer
Credit.

Exchange Program Credit
Students who participate in the College’s domestic college exchanges will receive credit at Pomona upon receipt of an official transcript from the exchange college. To equal one Pomona credit, the exchange course must be four semester credits. Three-semester hour courses earn
0.75 Pomona courses (applicable to students who cross-enroll at other Clark Atlanta schools while enrolled at Spelman College.) Thus, in some cases students may not earn a full four courses for the exchange semester. In no case will more than four courses of Pomona credit be awarded. Grades earned at the exchange college are computed into the student’s Pomona grade point average.

Final Exam Schedule
Students must take all final examinations for the classes in which final exams are administered during the time reserved for the exam according to the final examination schedule published in the Schedule of Courses. Students who have three final exams occurring in two days are eligible to reschedule one of the exams, with the permission of the instructor. No other final exam date/time changes are allowed unless by permission of the Academic Procedures Committee.

Graduation Honors
The graduation honors cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude are awarded to the top 25
percent of the spring semester graduates by grade point average. Students who
complete their requirements in the summer or fall of the prior to their
commencement year are awarded honors based on the grade point average
cut-offs of the year corresponding to the calendar year of the semester they
completed.

Incomplete Grades
The Incomplete grade (I) is allowed only in cases of illness or emergency, with permission of the instructor and the Academic Procedures Committee. The
college deadline for completing coursework in which an Incomplete grade is granted is the end of the
first week of the following semester.

Independent Study
Students may enroll in one Independent Study course per semester for the freshman and sophomore years, and two per semester in the junior and senior years, with the permission of the instructor and advisor. An Independent Study Form must be submitted
to the Office of the Registrar that details the agreement between the student and the instructor regarding the work to be completed, and the form must be signed by the student, instructor, and the student’s advisor.
Independent Study courses may not be arranged with part-time faculty.
Students add/drop Independent Studies courses like regular courses and according to the same deadlines.
The completed Independent Study form must accompany other appropriate enrollment
forms.

Pomona College Scholars
Each semester, the distinction of Pomona College Scholar is awarded to
the top quarter of students in each class as determined by semester grade point
average, who in the past semester: 1) completed at least three graded courses;
2) did not receive any incomplete (I) grades; and 3) did not receive any "no credit" (NC) grades in any
course that is normally included in the grade-point average calculation.
The GPA cutoffs for Pomona College Scholars eligibility are recalculated
every semester to determine the top 25 percent of each class, using the
actual GPAs earned by students in each class. The chart below provides
GPA cutoffs for recent semesters. Please note that these figures are
provided for historical perspective only, and that future cutoffs depend on
the actual GPAs earned by students in future semesters and cannot be
determined in advance.

Study Abroad Credit
Students who participate in a Pomona College Study Abroad program may earn up to four Pomona course credits. Grades earned in the Pomona College Study Abroad Program are calculated into the student’s grade point average.
Students who are approved by the Study Abroad Committee to enroll in a non-Pomona program may also earn up to four Pomona course credits, subject to faculty approval of the courses. Grades earned in approved non-Pomona courses are not calculated into the student’s grade point average, but do appear on the student’s unofficial
transcript.
