Travel Stipends
Pomona College provides a travel stipend, which is a contribution toward the cost of travel between Los Angeles and the program site, to each student studying abroad.  You are responsible for making your own travel arrangements and purchasing your ticket.   If you withdraw from your study abroad program, the stipend must be returned to the College.

Booking Your Ticket
You must arrive by the designated start date and time for your program. Remember to allow for time changes, connecting flights, weather, and in-country transportation from the airport to the program site. Be aware that in many cases travel may take you one or two days to reach your destination.  Before making your travel arrangements, verify your program dates and arrival instructions with your program sponsor. Be sure and view the Travel Resources for information on travel agencies, rail passes, discount flights, youth hostels and more!

Some study abroad programs offer an optional group flight which you may purchase yourself using your travel stipend.  These flights leave from a designated city, so keep in mind that if you choose to utilize the group flight you may need to route your ticket from your hometown to the city of departure.  Be aware that this can be a more expensive option than flying directly from your hometown to your destination.

Your travel stipend has been established after consultation with travel agencies and overseas programs and you will be notified of the precise amount at Orientation.  Travel stipend checks will be available for you to retrieve from the OSA two weeks following Orientation.  Stipends are not released until all Participation Forms have been received.

Because airfares fluctuate and reservations fill quickly, it is essential to make your travel arrangements early. Please communicate with your program sponsor to assist you in planning. When booking your ticket, it may also help to consider the following:

  • Round-trip airfares are usually less expensive than one-way fares.
  • Change/cancellation fees and restrictions may vary considerably between different types of tickets, such as student tickets and regular-fare tickets.
  • Tickets involving a stopover are usually more expensive.

As you prepare to travel overseas, plan for high security at airports and lengthy waiting times. Most airlines advise that you arrive at the airport two to three hours prior to an international flight. Pack carefully. Airlines do not permit any sharp objects in carry-on bags. These include such items as: scissors, tweezers, utility knives, and razors. In addition, you may wish to contact airlines directly about other recommendations related to packing items like computers, cameras and electronic equipment. Confirm your reservations before you depart. Airline schedules fluctuate frequently and it is important that you stay in touch with your travel agent or airline about any changes that may occur.
