Melbourne | Townsville

Melbourne
With a population of more than three million, Melbourne is Australia’s second-largest city, and vies with Sydney for economic and cultural pre-eminence. Melbourne is also the country’s commercial and manufacturing center. Although motor vehicle plants, refineries, and industrial strips are certainly part of the cityscape, Melbourne has been dubbed the Garden City, with parks accounting for about one-fifth of its total acreage. Moreover, the ultra-modern development fails to detract from the city’s Old World Charm, which can be glimpsed in its wide, ordered streets and its well-preserved 19th-century architectural legacy.

Arcadia University helps students enroll directly in courses at the University of Melbourne, which was founded in 1853 and has gained international recognition as one of Australia’s leading research and higher education institutions.  The 50-acre main campus sits on the edge of Melbourne’s central business district in the suburb of Parkville. It is bordered by park lands and the cosmopolitan hub of Carlton, where cafés, theatres and cinemas abound. Arcadia staff will assist students with academics, housing, and excursions.

Fall semester (Semester II): early July to late November.
Spring semester (Semester I): early February to late June.

Fields of Study: Full university curriculum including anatomy, archaeology, art history, biology, botany, chemistry, cinema studies, classics, economics, English, environmental science, environmental studies, genetics, geography, geology, geophysics, history, linguistics, literature, mathematics, media studies, microbiology, music, philosophy, physics, physiology, political science, psychology, sociology, theology, women’s studies and zoology. Number of Students: Approximately 8 Pomona students. Arcadia group approximately 25 students. Total University of Melbourne enrollment approximately 44,000.

Academic Program: In this direct enrollment program, students enroll directly in courses at the University of Melbourne alongside Australian students. The University of Melbourne uses a point system to allocate course credit, so students should consult with Arcadia staff to enroll in a full course load of 50 points each semester, equaling four subjects (courses) worth 12.5 points each, or 4 semester credits. Pomona gives 1.0 Pomona course credit for 4.0 semester credits, and a maximum of 4.0 Pomona course credits will be granted for the semester. Pomona requires participants to take one course focusing on Australian culture, which might be in areas such as film, history, literature, sociology, or politics. Pomona students may not enroll in “Education in Natural Landscapes” for credit.

Arcadia also offers students excursions and activities to enhance their understanding of Australian culture.

Living arrangements: Students can choose to live in student apartments at RMIT Village or in Residential Colleges. Acceptance into a Residential College is highly selective, and therefore by no means guaranteed. For students in self-catered accommodation, Pomona provides a meal allowance.

Townsville
With a population of approximately 160,000, Townsville is the second-largest city in the state of Queensland. Advantageously situated on Cleveland Bay at the mouth of the Ross River, it has long been one of Australia’s most important ports and a major center of trade with the Pacific Islands. Moreover, resting in the tropical northeastern corner of the country, known locally as North Queensland, Townsville proudly serves as a gateway to some of the country’s most prized natural treasures: from the Great Barrier Reef to lush tropical rain forests (protected by World Heritage destination), from the savanna woodlands and the vast grazing lands to the northern reaches of the Great Dividing Range. And off beyond the mountains lies the rich volcanic plateau of the Atherton Tablelands, home to prolific plant and animal life.

The program in Townsville is administered by Arcadia University and hosted at James Cook University (JCU).  The program is designed for students majoring in the sciences, especially biology. Students take the majority of their courses in the School of Marine and Tropical Biology. Given its close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef and also the tropical rainforest, it is not surprising that Townsville is an important center for research in these areas.

Students should note only whole-letter grades are available.

Dates: Spring semester: early February to late-June

Fields of Study:  Aquaculture, biological sciences, botany, (including tropical ecology & tropical plant sciences,) chemistry, earth sciences, environmental science, geography, marine biology, microbiology, physics, zoology

Eligibility:  Pomona Biology 41E or Joint Sciences Biology 44. 9.0 GPA required.

Number of Students:  Approximately 4–6. Total university enrollment at the Townsville Campus is approximately 112,000.

Academic Program: Students may choose from a rich array of courses in the Faculty of Science,  Engineering and Information Technology, specifically within the School of Marine and Tropical Biology or the School of Earth and Environment Sciences.  Students may take courses from more than one department within a School, and should pay careful attention to prerequisites when selecting courses. Pomona also requires students to take one course focusing on Australian culture in an area such as literature, history, sociology or anthropology.

Courses at James Cook University generally carry 3.0 or 4.0 credits per course. Typically, students enroll in four courses in order to maintain a full load and receive 1.0 Pomona credit per course.  Students should work closely with the JCU adviser to plan an academic program that will total 4.0 Pomona course credits.  "Linking Indigenousness" may be taken as a non-credit course only.  A maximum of 4.0 Pomona course credits will be granted for the semester.  JCU students should note that only whole letter grades are available.

Living Arrangements: Normally, students live and take their meals on campus in one of the university residence halls.
