Berlin/IES
Few cities over recent years have been as much the center
of international public interest as Berlin. With a
population of three and a half million, Berlin is the
largest and most cosmopolitan German city. Now that
Germany is reunified, Berlin is once again the nation’s
capital. It is a metropolis of the old central European
style, filled with remarkable contrasts and an extensive
cultural life in theater, music, and the visual arts.
Through the Institute for the International Education of
Students (IES) and Humboldt University, Pomona
participants enroll in a mix of IES and university
courses. The IES classes are designed for American
students and are taught in German. Students may also
choose from courses taught at Humboldt
University. Located in the former East Berlin, Humboldt
University was founded originally in 1810 as the
University of Berlin. It has boasted such luminaries as
philosophy professor Friedrich Hegel and students Heinrich
Heine, Friedrich Engels, and Karl Marx.
Dates:
Spring semester: early March to late July
Note: Pomona chooses the spring semester because of
the German academic calendar. The spring semester dates
allow full participation in regular university courses.
However, students with compelling academic reasons may
apply for the fall, but their university course choices
will be very limited since most fall courses run through
February.
Fields of Study: German language,
contemporary German politics, German literature, German
studies, art history, cinema, economics, history, gender
studies, music history, philosophy, and sociology.
Eligibility: Five semesters of
college-level German or the equivalent. A language course
must have been completed within one year prior to the
start of the program and priority is given to students who
will have taken German during the semester preceding their
anticipated study in Germany. 9.0 GPA.
Number of Students: Approximately 2–4. Total group
approximately 40–50.
Academic Program: Students are required by Pomona
to take at least one 3.0-semester-credit university course and to take
IES'
advanced language course (1.0 Pomona course credit);
highly advanced students may substitute a German
literature course for the language course. For the
remaining courses, students enroll in a combination of IES
and university courses. Most students take an additional
language course, Advanced Grammar and Usage, level I, II
or III, (3-4 semester hours). Pomona grants 1.0 course credit
for 4.0 semester credits, so students need to take enough
courses to equal at least 16 semester credits for 4.0
Pomona course credits. Students may take only one
course on a P/NC basis.
Living Arrangements: Students live with Germans
in homes and apartments throughout the city. Pomona
provides a meal allowance.

European Union/IES
The
European Union is the institutional framework designed
to coordinate the political and economic policies of its
member states. It is also a community of nearly 500
million citizens and one of the largest markets in the
world. As the European Union continues to grow in size
and influence, understanding it is crucial for
understanding Europe and our world. With its central
location in Germany, Freiburg makes an ideal starting
point for the exploration of this region, and also
offers a rich cultural experience in a picturesque
university town characterized by a gothic cathedral and
architecture from the middle ages.
This program is designed for students with
a focused interest in the European Union, and typically
draws students majoring in economics, politics, inte rnational
relations, and public policy. Students are able to study
the development and activities of the EU in an excellent,
central location, with field trips to sites that are
important to the affairs and interests of the EU and its
plans for the future. The field trips are an integral part
of the academic program and include Brussels, Luxembourg,
Frankfurt, Strasbourg, Paris, Geneva, Budapest, Prague,
Warsaw, Bratislava, and Riga.
All EU program courses are taught in English by European
faculty. There are also opportunities to participate in a
model European Union simulation or academic internships.
All EU courses are held at the IES EU Program Center near
the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität in the center of Freiburg.
All major university buildings are within a five-minute
walk from the IES Center.
Dates:
Fall semester: early September to late December
Spring semester: mid-January to mid-May
Fields of Study: economics,
political science, international business, and German
language.
Eligibility: Pomona highly
recommends German 2 or the equivalent, and requires two
college-level courses in the social sciences. 9.0 GPA
required.
Number of Students:
Approximately 5. Total group approximately 50.
Academic Program: All
participants are required to enroll in the EU Studies
Integrative Seminar (1 Pomona credit) and a German
language course ( .75 Pomona credits). German courses are

level. Students then select three IES courses ( .75 Pomona
credit each) for a total of 4 Pomona credits or 16
semester credits. Students may take only one course on a
P/NC basis.
Living Arrangements: Students
live in German residence halls throughout the city,
usually with a mix of German and international students in
the living groups.

Freiburg/IES
Known as the capital of the Black Forest, Freiburg is
famous for its magnificent Gothic Freiburger Munster
(cathedral) and its distinguished university. Completed in
the early 16th century, the cathedral’s soaring, red
sandstone tower dominates the city. To many Germans,
however, Freiburg conjures up images not of religion but
of youth: with more than 25,000 students, the city’s
thriving university community fosters an unusually lively
social and intellectual atmosphere.
The Institute for the International Education of Students
(IES) organizes and administers this study abroad program in
Freiburg with a focus on German language and culture.
The program is designed for students with advanced German
proficiency. Students may take a mix of IES program
courses and regular classes at the University of Freiburg.
All courses are taught in German. There is a wide spectrum
of classes on offer at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität.
Founded in 1457, the university is Germany’s second oldest
and one of its most highly regarded.
Dates: Spring semester: late February to
late July
Note: Pomona chooses the spring semester because of
the German academic calendar. The spring semester dates
allow full participation in regular university courses.
However, students with compelling academic reasons may
apply for the fall, but their university course choices
will be very limited since most fall courses run through
February.
Fields of Study: German
language, contemporary German politics, German literature,
German studies, art history, cinema, economics, gender
studies, history, music history, philosophy, religious
studies, and sociology.
Eligibility: Five semesters of
college-level German or the equivalent for the spring
semester. 9.0 GPA required.
Number of Students:
Approximately 5. Total group approximately 75.
Academic Program: Students are
required by Pomona to take IES’s advanced language course
(1 Pomona course credit); highly advanced students may
substitute a German literature course for the language

students must enroll in at least one university course.
Most students take an additional language course, Advanced
Grammar and Usage, level I, II or III, (3-4 semester

students should plan an academic program that equals at

the living groups.
