(Re)Framing ‘the Gap’:
Deconstructing Dominant Discourses of Race and Class in a Southern California High School
As school officials, politicians, and academics debate the causes of an academic achievement gap, few are listening to students and considering how dominant ideologies and school practices are constructing this gap and impacting students' lives. Employing a case study approach, this presentation draws upon two hundred in-depth interviews with students and school officials at a predominately Latina/o and Asian American/Pacific Islander suburban high school to explore the framing and fostering of an educational gap that differentially shapes students' schooling experiences and detrimentally hinders their relationships. As one of few studies to focus on the two fastest growing panethnic groups in the United States, this project disentangles the construction of an educational gap and considers how students’ opportunities for academic growth and their development of cross-racial/ethnic social and cultural capital are stunted at schools such as Southern California High School.

If you have not been back to campus recently, you might be surprised to see buildings going up east of Frary. It is the site for the two new residence halls which have sustainable features incorporated into the design, such as a rooftop garden and solar electricity and heating. Additional campus projects include green landscaping, water and energy conservation efforts, and recycling and waste management, among many others. This presentation will provide a summary of campus sustainability at Pomona, and efforts to collaborate amongst the Claremont Colleges and the surrounding community. The PowerPoint presentation will include renderings of the new residence halls for those who may be curious! Smith Campus Center, Room 208, Second Level, 170 E. Sixth Street.

The Right to Hope: Farm Labor and Struggles for Equity in the SalinasValley, 1965 to 1973
The politics of food production has become an issue of great visibility in recent years. Professor Summers Sandoval’s work sheds light on the history of agricultural production and the effect it has had on the social lives of farm workers and employers. By looking at organized efforts for educational equity and labor rights in California’s Salinas Valley, his work helps us better understand the social and cultural foundations of how we produce food and how those who produce that food may suffer as a result.

He teaches Abstract Algebra, Calculus, Introduction to Statistics, and Linear Algebra. Sarkis focuses his research on exploring minimal conditions under which power series are formal endomorphisms.

p-ness: a testimony
Prime numbers are foundational to all of mathematics. They're kindergarten-simple to describe, yet many of their properties remain so elusive that million-dollar bounties have been offered for their capture, dead (disproved) or alive (proved). In this talk, Professor Sarkis will survey a brief history of prime numbers, what is known, believed, and dreamed about them, and how they fit into major historical trends of mathematics, science, and philosophy. Along the way, he hopes to convey some of the elegance of mathematics, the mindset of the process of mathematical discovery, and the surety of mathematical knowledge. The less math you think you know, the more he invites you to attend.

One of the great opportunities for liberal arts research is the relative freedom to pursue projects that are at once both highly specialized and potentially far-reaching, but without the high stakes of fundability and productivity that funnel so much of university research into defined ‘growth areas’. Drawing on some recent projects, this talk will argue that research is not only integral to a liberal arts mission, but that science research by students and faculty at liberal arts colleges plays a unique and critical role.
