What is an analytically-oriented interview?
Usually posed by strategy consulting firms and some high-tech firms, these questions aim to discern your analytic skills. They can take the form of brainteasers or sample cases.
Sample brainteasers:
How would you size the market for automobile tires?
Are there at least two dogs with the same number of hairs in their fur in the U.S.?
If you have nine balls and eight weigh the same, how can you figure out which one weighs less if you can only use a scale three times?
Sample cases:
You have been hired to market a new soft drink to the 50+ age group. What are the important issues and how do you handle them?
Your client is a pulp manufacturer who intends to build a new plant. How do you help him decide where to build?
Your client is a record manufacturer who is losing market share. Help her figure out the problem and come up with remedies.
Because these questions test your analytic skills, they require that you break the question down into smaller parts. It is very important to talk through your answer so that the interviewer can see how you think. It is also important for the case questions that you ask intelligent questions to get more information that can help you solve the problem.
You should plan to practice case questions until they come naturally. The Career Development Office can provide mock case interviews for you.
