These nationally recognized fellowships, sponsored by the Center for California Studies at California State University, Sacramento, are an outstanding opportunity for college graduates to engage in public service and prepare for a future career. Fellows work 10-11 months as full-time staff members in the California State Assembly, Senate, Executive Branch or within the California Court System. They gain first-hand experience in governing the most diverse state in the nation and a sense of personal involvement in the leadership of California society.

The only prerequisite for the programs is a four-year college or university degree and a demonstrated interest in state government and public service. Fellows come from all cultural, political, economic, career and educational backgrounds, and no previous legislative or political experience is required.

Job Activities: The Economic Development Project Coordinator will be responsible for developing and managing programs that support the local economic and employment bases. Work includes researching, surveying, and developing reports and databases on Sonoma County’s various economic sectors. The Project Coordinator will also be responsible for coordinating advisory groups and taskforces comprised of leaders from local businesses, government agencies, educational institutions, and community groups. Current and past programs include: Economic Research, Hospitality Sector Research and Program Development (wine, tourism, food); Creative Cluster Research and Program Development, Environmentally Sustainable Business Practices, Energy and Water Conservation, Health Policy, the Hispanic Community, Workforce Development, Film Program, and Agricultural Programs and Policies (see EDB website for examples of current programs).

The Pickering Fellowship program is funded by the U.S. Department of State, and is administered by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation.

Eligibility requirements
Undergraduate Fellowships are open to students enrolled in their sophomore year of college at the time of Student Programs application. Students who will have received their bachelor's degree by June 2008 and will be enrolled in the first year of a two-year full-time master's degree program relevant to international affairs for the 2008-2009 academic year are eligible for the Graduate Fellowship. Only United States citizens will be considered for the Pickering Fellowships. Women, members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, and students with financial need are encouraged to apply.

Families USA - Fellowship in Health Care Policy

Families USA offers an opportunity to apply for the Wellstone and Villers Fellowships in health care policy.

The Wellstone Fellowship for Social Justice aims to advance social justice through health care advocacy by focusing particularly on the unique challenges facing communities of color.

Villers Fellows will conduct research on a range of health care policy issues, and write and contribute to publications that are relevant to current health policy debates.

Kathryn Davis Fellowships for Peace (International)
Language Fellowship

Fellowships will cover the full cost of a summer of language study from beginner to graduate in Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, Portuguese, and Russian at the Middlebury College Language Schools during the summer of 2008. Each individual grant covers the full comprehensive fee (tuition, room, and board) for one summer at the Middlebury Language Schools, plus a stipend to assist in defraying program-related expenses.

One summer of intensive immersion language at Middlebury is the equivalent of a full year of language study taken during the regular academic year. (Applicants who are interested in transferring academic credit should check with their home institution regarding transferability.)

The Davis Fellowships are merit-based and intended for exceptionally qualified individuals with demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas: international, global, or area studies, international politics and economics, peace and security studies, and/or conflict resolution. Individuals in other fields, including working professionals, are also encouraged to apply if their field of expertise requires them to study one of the critical languages listed above.

HOW TO APPLY:
To qualify for consideration for one of the Davis Fellowships, please submit, POSTMARKED by January 14, 2008:

1. The attached application (see below) and the application essay. Please submit three copies each of the essay and the coversheet
2. A completed application to the Language School to which you are applying. In some cases (Arabic) the deadline for admission to the School is earlier than the deadline for the Davis Fellowship.
