Graduate School
Personal Statements & Essays
Essays will vary in number, topic and frequency depending on the type of school to which you apply:
- For medical school, there is a general essay and individual schools often require more detailed essays.
- Business schools each have several essays.
- Graduate schools look very closely at the essay as an indication of your academic interests and writing
ability
Writing and Evaluation Tips:
- Give yourself plenty of time to write your essay. Bring it to a faculty member or to the Career Development Office for critique. You will need to write several drafts.
- It is often helpful to write your first drafts from your "heart," and edit those drafts with your "head." In other words, write your drafts using your passion for the field, and edit them using your skills of analysis and logic. The end result will be a balanced essay.
Ideas for structuring your essay:
- Begin with a personal incident that inspired your pursuit of the field or degree.
- Describe specific scientific or literary research that you have pursued and want to pursue.
- Describe your ambitions and how this degree will help you achieve them.
