Graduate School
Recommendation Letters
Regardless of the school to which you apply, you will need at least three letters.
Depending on the school, you may need letters from physicians, researchers, community
members or supervisors. For all but business school, you will need letters from professors.
Here is how to secure letters:
1. Approach faculty and others with whom you have had a good relationship.
Do this several months before you will need the letters.
2. Tell them of your intentions to apply to school and ask if they feel
they know you well enough to write you a letter. This gives them the opportunity
to bow out should they feel uncomfortable in any way.
3. At least six weeks before the letters are due, provide them with a copy of
your essay, a resume, the recommendation form and a stamped addressed envelope.
Tell them that you will return in two weeks to pick up the letter to mail for them.
4. Return in two weeks. If they have not completed the letter, give them 10 more days.
Continue this pattern until you have the letter.
