Director's Message

Dear Families,

What do you want to be when you grow up? While this question is usually posed to our young child, we still worry and sometimes become concerned if we are watching our adult child struggle with it. We may wonder if our son or daughter is prepared, where and how can they seek assistance and resources?

In the Career Development Office (CDO) we offer a wide range of resources to help your son or daughter with finding a career focus. Whether those plans are for a short-term, mid-term, or long term goal, we combine a hands-on approach through advising, counseling, workshops, speaker panels, career fairs, internships, and more. Our career resource library is one of the most current and extensive in the nation. We offer current information technology to help each student research and find specific information about the career area they seek. I encourage you to become familiar with the CDO services for students.

The Pomona College liberal arts curriculum, which offers exploration of a variety of disciplines, allows students the flexibility to prepare for a range of after-graduation options. A large number of Pomona College alumni pursue graduate or professional training within 5 years of graduation, often working for one or two years first. In this section of the CDO Web you can review where recent Pomona graduates have gone.

The Pomona College education provides highly valued workplace skills that are transferable to a number of occupations: research and investigative skills, language skills, communication skills, critical and analytical thinking skills, artistic comprehension skills, and planning skills. The close interaction between professors, classmates, and administrators set in a residential community of learning provides a unique, rigorous, and holistic balance to developing your son or daughter as a professional.

Every individual has his or her unique timetable for establishing a career plan. Often graduates will make adjustments as they develop or even change career goals completely. The flexibility of the knowledge gained form the Pomona College liberal arts degree is what makes it especially valuable. As a general guideline, we have checklists by class year that can help your son or daughter make the most of planning for his or her future.

If you have opportunities for internships, job shadowing, or would like to offer job assistance, we would like to hear from you and have you become involved in helping with this process.

We look forward to working with your son or daughter and helping him or her with decisions on majors, careers, graduate schools, fellowships or other plans.

Sincerely,

Carl Martellino
