Route 47 FAQ's/Privacy Policy
for Students and Alumni
FAQs
Introduction to Route 47
The Career Development Office (CDO) at Pomona College contracts with Symplicity
Corporation and the NACElink Network ® to provide Pomona College students/alumni
with a communication platform for recruiting and career exploration, called
Route 47. Students/Alumni utilize this platform for many career-related purposes
which include searching for job and internship listings, participating in the
on-campus recruiting program, finding on-campus jobs, and learning about events
and programs.
The Route 47 system collects certain user information. Our privacy statement
will outline and describe the conditions and terms on how this information is
gathered and how it is used. Please review this privacy policy carefully so that
you understand what is collected, how the information is used, and how changes
can be made by users.

any other information provided in support of their efforts to secure employment,
will reside on NACElink Network ® secure servers, and policies governing this
data are covered in the NACElink

This information may be shared with faculty and staff at Pomona College, other
Claremont Colleges , Nationwide Internship Consortium colleges, and other bona
fide agents of employing agencies. The disclosure of this information could
occur by any means including but is not limited to: mail, facsimile
transmission, email transmission or other internet supported modes of transport.

policy under the
Federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (Pomona College FERPA
statement), as well as the
Pomona
College Acceptable Use Policy and
Computing
Security Policy. All of our users' information is considered confidential
and its use is restricted to staff at the Pomona College Career Development,
other Claremont Colleges, Nationwide Internship Consortium colleges, and on an
as-needed basis to other parties. Information collected is used to provide and
tailor services to our users. It is also used to construct aggregate reports
that assist us in program planning. Any reports shared outside of the career
center, will only be shared in aggregate form and will not compromise any
privacy issues.
NACE's commitment to all users at Pomona College both employers and
students/alumni, is that NACE will maintain the confidentiality of all
information collected on Route 47 and will not sell, transmit, or disclose, in
any way, data to any other organization. NACElink is the host server, storing

Internet Protocol (IP) Addresses and Aggregated User Data
NACE collects IP addresses from all users of the site, and collects and monitors
other data and information about the activities of users on the site
collectively. This data is used anonymously and in the aggregate.
Cookies
Cookies, which are small text files recorded in a user's hard drive, are
employed by thousands of sites to enhance users' web viewing experience. Cookies
cannot damage user files, nor can they read information from a user's hard
drive. Cookies in and of themselves do not personally identify users, although
they do identify a user's computer. Cookies allow sites to "remember" users
across pages of a site and across multiple visits to a site. However, when users
access NACElink, it will set a cookie while they are on the site and may collect
system information such as an IP address and browser version. Once users log out
of the site or close their browser window the cookies are deleted. Thus,
NACElink will not be storing information as to the number of times that a user
visited the site. It will be necessary for users to log in each time that they
wish to access NACElink.
Security
NACE takes precautions to protect the user's information. When users submit
sensitive information via the Web Site, the information is protected both online
and off-line. In addition, the job seeker and employer data is password
protected, so only the user can access this information. All personally
identifiable information collected by NACE is stored in limited-access servers.
NACElink has technical, administrative, and physical security measures and
safeguards in place to protect against the loss, misuse, and alteration of the
information under NACE's control. This site uses firewalls to protect from loss,
misuse, and alteration of the information under its control. Pomona College
Career Development Office has associated itself with NACE and NACElink in order
to provide improved services to Pomona College students and alumni. Many of the
provisions contained in this statement are based upon representations made by
NACE and NACElink. While Pomona College believes that NACE and NACElink provide
a valuable service to the Pomona College job seeker, NACE and NACElink are not
affiliated with Pomona College. Therefore, Pomona College can not guarantee, nor
does it otherwise accept responsibility for, any portion of this statement that
depends upon NACE's representations and its compliance with those
representations.

Job/Internship Postings
Opportunities posted on Route 47 may or may not be reviewed before posting.
Users are urged to review the opportunities on a case by case basis and use
caution and common sense before applying to any opportunity. The CDO strongly
advises students/alumni to not disclose social security numbers, credit card
information or bank account numbers to unknown employers. The CDO encourages
students/alumni to omit their home number and street addresses from contact
information on resumes and cover letters. The CDO or Pomona College cannot be
held responsible and/or liable for any damages, real or imagined, past, present
or future, from the information contained in or requested by the opportunities
posted in Route 47. Neither NACE, NACElink/Symplicity, nor DirectEmployers (for
the NACElink Alumni Network) reviews opportunities posted at Route 47 or at
NACElink.com. Site users are urged to
validate job postings and use caution and common sense when applying.
Legitimate employers do not usually need users’ bank account numbers (See
exception below). One of the ways a fraudulent employer will attempt to get
consumers' bank information is by stating that they will only pay via direct
deposit of a paycheck. While direct deposit of a paycheck is a convenience, if
that is the only option an employer offers, then users should be cautious about
accepting the job unless they have carefully evaluated the potential employer.
Most employers will give you the option of direct deposit, but not demand that
it is used. Ideally, you should wait until you have met the employer in person
before agreeing to a direct deposit option. Any employer who wants your bank
account information up front is an employer you should check out as carefully as
possible.
Note: The U.S. government typically does require that employees agree to direct
deposit. Make sure you are genuinely dealing with a government agency when
conducting these interviews. Also, if you have been working for an employer for
a while and you are very sure about their legitimacy, then agreeing to a direct
deposit is usually fine. However, "Work from home" and telecommuting jobs are
most at risk when agreeing to direct deposit, especially from brand new
employers. Use caution and common sense.
Regarding payment transfers, while some jobs may require an employee to make
transfers for employers, legitimate employers making this request will go to
extraordinary efforts to check the job seeker prior to making the hire. This
would usually involve meeting the jobseeker in person and conducting rigorous
interviews. This kind of job hire would not usually be made via email or even
the telephone or a single meeting. And a legitimate employer would typically ask
their new employee to make transfers from their business accounts, not your
personal accounts or from PayPal. Any applicants to these positions should draw
a line and understand that transferring money for employers from their personal
bank account or personal PayPal account is off-limits, period.
The
World Privacy Forum provides more information on how to avoid these scams.

International Opportunities
Job seekers need a mechanism that will allow them to gauge the trustworthiness
and effectiveness of a job site's protection against bad job ads. Currently,
this does not exist. There is almost no transparency for consumers trying to
make this kind of judgment. Users should conduct appropriate research before
applying to any and all positions posted in Route 47, but especially those
positions that are posted internationally. Some of these opportunities may be
scams, and the CDO is not able to evaluate the legitimacy of these
opportunities. Red flags that should alert you to the presence of a job scam
include but are not limited to:
-
Request for bank account numbers.
-
Request for SSN.
-
Request to "scan the ID" of a jobseeker, for example, a drivers' license. Scam
artists will say they need to scan jobseekers' IDs to "verify identity." This is
not a legitimate request.
-
Monster.com lists descriptive words in job postings that are tip-offs to
fraud. Their list includes "package-forwarding," "money transfers," "wiring
funds," "eBay," and "PayPal." WPF researchers also found that the term "Foreign
Agent Agreement" often appears in fraudulent contracts and emails sent to
jobseekers.
For more detailed information on how to avoid these scams and what actions to
take if you are a victim of these scams, contact the
World Privacy
Forum
Here are some suggested questions that you should ask all international
organizations that offer teaching opportunities:
-
Do you provide help to students/alumni in terms of the paperwork necessary to
obtain the proper visas?
-
Do you insist that students/alumni have the correct paperwork in place before
arriving to teach?
-
Do you encourage students/alumni to arrive and obtain paperwork afterwards?
-
Do you have a website that provides this type of information?

Students/Alumni
In addition, because user authentication on the Internet is difficult, The CDO
cannot and does not confirm that each user is who they claim to be. Because we
do not and cannot control the behavior of participants on our web site, in the
event that a user has a dispute with one or more other users, the user with the
dispute releases the CDO and Pomona College (and our agents and employees) from
claims, demands, and damages (actual and consequential, direct and indirect of
every kind and nature, known and unknown), arising out of or in any way
connected with such disputes. Students/Alumni that submit their resume to any
service in Route 47 including but not limited to the On-Campus Recruiting
program, and any Resume Book, authorizes the CDO to forward their resume to
selected employers. Students/Alumni’ primary resume is viewable in the resume
database search by employers who specifically recruit at Pomona College and the
rest of the Claremont Colleges. Students/Alumni who do not want employers to
view their resume from this search should change their selection to “no” next to
the question “Include in Resume Books.” They can set up this preference in their
profile under “Email/Resume Book Preferences.”

Search Firms
The CDO works exclusively with retained executive search firms only. Please note
that we are not able to post positions on behalf of contingent searches/firms.
Since we do not screen positions or employers, we cannot ensure all search firms
in our database are retained search firms. Student/Alumni users should confirm
if a search firm is retained or contingent before applying to one of their
positions.
Code of Conduct
Route 47 is for the express purpose of employment/career opportunities and
exploration, for our students and alumni. Certain uses are inconsistent with
this purpose including, but not limited to:
-
Activities that are illegal or fraudulent
-
Use that inaccurately implies endorsement, approval, or sponsorship by CDO (or
any individual of Pomona College)
-
Use that can be confused with official communications of the CDO
-
Mass mailings (sometimes known as spamming)
-
Activities that violate other users privacy, such as granting access to the
system or distributing information obtained from these services
-
Hate speech or harassment or
pornography
The CDO will deny further access to the secure portion of this web site to those
who engage in these or similar practices.
Updating Account Information
Users may change or correct personal information and password information at any
time. To do so, simply login to your account, go to your profile and locate
options for editing this information.
Conclusion
Finally, note that we expect that you will use caution and common sense when
using the web site. The material contained herein may contain inaccuracies or
typographical errors. The CDO makes no representations about the accuracy,
reliability, completeness, or timeliness of the website or the material. The use
of the web site is at your own risk.
