Finding a Job
Employment Agencies/Headhunters
These agencies can work in two ways: 1. find temporary employees for client companies. 2. find permanent employees for client companies. Often, you can begin as a "temp" and get hired on by the employer once you have proven yourself for a certain period of time. It is best to check with the agency in advance to learn the period of time during which you are considered an agency employee. In most cities, there are agencies that specialize in different industries such as scientific work, entertainment, legal, etc. Approach agencies involved in the areas that interest you. Most agencies charge the employer. We recommend that you do not engage an agency that charges you.
Some employment agencies and headhunters will place you in a permanent position. Remember that all agencies work for the employer and may not have your best interests at heart. Make sure you ask a lot of questions. Most headhunters seek experienced people or those with specific technical skills.
The Job Bank books, located in Section 60 of the CDO Resource Library, offer employment agency listings. A few agency suggestions, with temporary opportunities in laboratory/science, entertainment, or paralegal work, are listed below. Also, review the links in Section 60 of CDO Site-ings for additional leads, and remember to use the Yellow Pages to assist you with finding local temporary employment agencies.
