Finding a Job
Effective Use of Your Time
Because most jobs are found through networking, you should devote the largest
part of your time to that activity. However, the 24-hour availability of the
Internet allows you to make the most of nights and weekends when other avenues
are unavailable. If you are interested in finance or consulting, on-campus
recruiting should carry more weight in your time allocation.
Generally, you may want to apportion your job search time as follows: 40%
networking, 30% Internet & CDO library research, 20% campus recruiting/career
fairs, 10% ads and agencies. On a weekly basis, if you spend 10 hours per week
on the job search, you would commit:
- Four hours per week networking. Perhaps calling 5 alumni per week (use
the Alumni Career Advisor Database in the CDO).
- Three hours per week using CDO Site-ings, employer websites, and
visiting the CDO Resource Library--perhaps taking a break from studying
twice a week.
- Two hours per week researching campus recruiters and interviewing.
- One hour per week scanning the Sunday want ads and calling employment
agencies.
