Internships
How do I find an internship?
Searching for an internship may be as simple as coming across the right
website listing, department posting, or referral from a faculty member. In
truth, though, finding a good internship often requires the willingness to do
the research for it.
Take these steps:
- Start by selecting two or three fields about which you would like to
learn more first-hand.
- Begin your research for internships using every resource you can think
of (CDO, faculty, former employers, alumni, family, friends).
- Narrow down your choices and find out what you need to do to apply.
- Send out your applications and follow up on them with a phone call one
to two weeks after you send them.
Researching and resources:
Searching for an internship can be hard work, but it definitely pays off when
you are applying for jobs. Knowing what and who your resources are is key to a
successful internship search. To help you get started, take a look at the
following list. It's also good to bounce ideas off a counselor in the CDO - even
if you don't have any idea what type of internship you would like to do!

- Contact prospective organizations/companies directly

How do I begin and complete an internship successfully?
- Dress appropriately and always be prompt.
- Learn what the office personality is like and act accordingly.
- Always keep a positive attitude whether you are asked to make
photocopies or design a web page.
- Be dependable and avoid missing internship time whenever possible. If
you must miss work, call in advance to notify your supervisor.
- Be respectful of your co-workers' space and responsibilities. And
don't forget, co-workers are a great resource for learning more about the
work environment.
- Make sure your tasks are clearly defined, then plan and organize them.
Pace yourself.
- Keep an internship journal.
- Ask questions!
- Finish your projects on time.
- Always be flexible and willing to pitch in where you're needed.
- Ask to be rotated through or to have time to observe other departments
in order to broaden your experience with the organization.
- Always express disappointment with an internship constructively. Don't
burn bridges!
- Make sure to have a wrap up or evaluation meeting with your
supervisor/s when you complete your internship. Find out if you may use
them as a reference.
- Ask for and give feedback, and don't forget to thank your supervisor
and colleagues for the valuable learning opportunity.
