What should I wear to the interview?
It is important to realize that you can be yourself while also dressing
appropriately. You should know that most employers are interested in
interviewees who are well-groomed and professionally dressed. Make sure you
don't wear anything that distracts from what you say.
General tips:
- Remember to shower and wash your hair before an interview
- Hair should be clean, tidy, and away from your face
- Avoid cologne, perfume or strong-smelling aftershave
- Jewelry should be kept to a minimum
- Shoes should be polished
- Clothes should be clean and neatly ironed or pressed
- Play it safe--you can dress differently once you start work
- Clothes should fit well and be comfortable
- Choose an outfit that you like
What Is Appropriate Attire for Women?
For traditional business settings (banking, consulting, insurance, etc.):
- Suit, consisting of jacket and matching skirt
- Blouse
- Hose and flats or pumps
For other settings, the following may also be appropriate:
- Dress with jacket
- Jacket, skirt and blouse
- Hose and flats or pumps
General Tips:
- If you wear pants, you risk making a negative impression for some
employers.
- Dress modestly: wear a slip; avoid plunging necklines, sheer blouses, and
mini skirts.
- Shoes should be closed-toed pumps or flats in a dark or neutral color.
- Take an extra pair of hose in case of a run.
- Avoid bright colors (red may be appropriate).
- Make-up should be minimal.
- Earrings should not call attention to themselves.
- Avoid noisy jewelry (e.g. bangle bracelets).
What Is Appropriate Attire for Men?
For traditional business settings (banking, consulting, insurance, etc.):
- Suit (not black) or navy blazer and gray dress slacks
- White or light blue dress shirt
- Tie (silk or silk-like)
- Dark socks and dress shoes
For arts, education, nonprofit, and other settings, the following may also be
appropriate:
- Dress slacks plus sport coat (wool or wool/polyester blend) or Navy blazer
- Dress shirt
- Tie (silk or silk-like)
- Dark socks and dress shoes
General Tips:
- You can never go wrong by wearing a suit to an interview.
- In general, your tie is your vehicle for self expression. Just don't wear
a fish tie.
- For traditional business settings, short hair is expected.
- Avoid flashy jewelry.
- Shave before your interview.
