Tutoring Instructions & Information
Review tutoring listings
Thank you for your interest in tutoring. Please read the following
instructions and information to help you prepare for and conduct your tutoring
employment successfully. Additional questions or concerns are welcomed;
please contact Merryann Bishop via
email or call ext. 18144
(909-621-8144).
Pay rates: You can generally ask for $10-$15 per hour. Current tutors
have suggested asking toward the high end initially then you have negotiating
room.
How to get the job: Be courteous and be honest about your experience.
When you call, you can say “My name is_____________ and I was given this
referral by the Pomona College Career Development Office.” Professional,
business-like messages are best if you need to leave a message. Be sure to leave
your telephone number and the best time to reach you. If you have an answering
machine, be sure that your message represents you as a responsible person.
Return telephone messages promptly if you are serious about being hired.
What to do when you get the job: Always let our office know as soon as
you are hired. Additionally, if you come across a job that has been filled
please let our office know. Email works well.
Places to meet with your tutees: Several places have been used, study
lounges in Walker, Harwood, Oldenborg Library, Seaver Science Libraries, areas
in the Smith Campus Center & the Claremont Public Library. Some parents will
offer to pick you up and bring you to their home and others will require you to
drive to their home (if you have transportation).
Proficiency in subject matter: Please tutor only those subjects which you
are proficient in, it is best if you have had AP coursework in the subject that
you will be tutoring.
Tutoring special needs: When assisting students with special needs such
as Attention Deficient Disorder, ESL (English as a Second Language), etc.,
patience is a primary prerequisite. Experience working with such problems is
valuable and necessary.
