Advice from the Op-Ed Editor & the Editor:
  • "Most op-ed pieces are not published due to lack of argument…. The writer must identify the conflict in the first paragraph…. The framework of the argument should begin here and carry through the end…. Capture the reader's attention immediately and keep it throughout. In other words, 'if you don't want to wrestle with the tiger/issue, you have no reason to write.'"
  • Timeliness is a very big issue with the Times. According to the Editor, they would like to increase opinion pieces from Western writers and those not associated with think tanks. He noted however, that academics submissions tend to come in too late. Summary, if you see an issue in the paper, writing the opinion piece that day and sending it off by email will greatly increase your chances. In the subject heading, list the subject and in caps, the phrase "TIME SENSITIVE."
  • With a breaking event or very timely issue, faxed submissions are best.
  • Exclusivity is required for all pieces. This means it has not been submitted elsewhere.
  • All faxed pieces must include a signature as well as printed name.
  • The Times tries to respond to all faxed items within one week and mailed op-eds within two weeks. They ask that you do not call unless it has been a month with no word. If your piece is extremely timely and you need to know if you should send it elsewhere, call Maura Montallano, the op-ed assistant, at (213) 237-7939. She should be able to let you know after 2-3 days.
