Renovation of the Academic Quadrangle
Renovation of the Quad’s landscape and hardscape began in
mid-December 2007 and is scheduled for completion by May 1,
2008.
Project planning has been completed by the College’s
Landscape Master Plan Architect, Land Images. The completed
Quadrangle will provide a more formal landscape design;
however, achieving this formality will be accomplished by
using less formal plant specimens that are best suited to
this climate region. Formal turf areas will be held to a
minimum and overall irrigation requirements will be
minimized by the mostly draught tolerant plant palette.
Each of the three buildings that border the Quadrangle will
have its own signature garden space that transitions from
the open space into the respective building entrances. The
plant material for each of these spaces will be related to
the respective building’s architecture. Outdoor teaching and
social spaces will also be an integral part of the renovated
landscape. The space to the north of Pearsons Hall and east
of Crookshank will include a new pergola and outdoor bar-b-que.
This area will be configured to provide a formal lawn area
for such outdoor activities as croquet. A permanent table
and seats will also allow the space to be used for teaching
classes outdoors.
A water fountain with perimeter seat walls will grace the
Harrison side entrance to the renovated Quadrangle. Concrete
and permeable pavement walkways will complete the formal
layout of the adjacent areas.
The general contractor for this project is Braeger
Construction and the total project budget is $1.8 million.
Renovation of Seaver South
The renovated Seaver South will house a new vivarium and
aquatic research facilities, lower division Biology
laboratories and classroom space, as well as academic office
space, research laboratories and instructional laboratory
space for both the Neuroscience and Biology.
The renovation of Seaver South is scheduled to begin
construction in January 2008, after Mason Hall’s renovation
has been completed. Completion of the Seaver South project
is currently scheduled for January 2009. Plans and
specifications for this project were provided by Brian Bloom
and Associates. The general contractor is Whiting Turner
Construction. The total project budget for the renovation of
Seaver South is $34 million. |
