Energy/Carbon Control |
| |
Pomona College works hard to conserve energy, thereby
reducing its carbon emissions and many other environmental
impacts. There’s still a lot of work to do, but the college
has begun by:
- Adopting a Sustainable Building Guide (link to file:
Sustainable Building Guide to reduce the energy consumption
of its buildings via
- Installation of solar panels
- Use of reflective roofing and paving materials
- Encouraging alternative transportation
- Harnessing the powers of natural daylighting instead of
artificial lighting
- Improving roof and wall insulation
- Placement of light shelves on all the windows to reduce
cooling costs
- Installation of occupant sensor controls to reduce
unnecessary lighting
- Encouraging people to turn off the lights and other
equipment when not in use
Students have also taken a leading role in helping the
college reduce its energy use and to turn to renewable
energy resources. A group called the
Campus Climate
Challenge has
worked on producing an energy/carbon audit for the campus,
and led a campus-wide contest for the residential building
able to reduce its electricity use the most.
The
Environmental Quality Committee has led an effort to “lease” compact
fluorescent light bulbs to students for free for use in
their dorm rooms, and many students are taking advantage of
this opportunity for a simple way to reduce their impact.
