Tuvan
Throat Singers to Perform at Pomona College

The all-female ensemble Tyva Kyzy ("Daughters of Tuva") will
present a concert at Pomona College on Saturday, February 17
at 8 p.m. Tuvan throat-singing is a traditional but little
known musical style consisting of multiple tone harmonic
singing. It originates from folk music in Tuva, located in
southern Siberia.
“Daughters of Tuva” was established in 1998, becoming the
first and only professional women’s group in Tuva to perform
all types of Tuvan throat singing. Tuvan throat singing,
with its myriad styles and techniques, differs from other
Central Asian regional music.
Traditionally, this type of singing has been practiced
mostly by men and prohibited for women. However, “Daughters
of Tuva” performs widely and also teaches throat singing to
interested young girls, breaking cultural taboos.
The group’s two recordings are titled, “Setkilimden sergek
yr-dyr” (“A Cheerful Song from my Soul”) and “Belek “ (“The
Gift").
“Daughters of Tuva” will also present a
lecture/demonstration titled "Introduction to Tuvan Throat
Singing" on Thursday, February 15 at 11 a.m.
The concert will take place at Bridges Hall of Music (150 E.
Fourth St., Claremont). The lecture/demonstration will be
held in Lyman Hall, Thatcher Music Building (340 N. College
Ave., Claremont). Both events are sponsored by the Pomona
