Angela
Davis to Discuss Civil and Human Rights in Pomona
College Talk
|
 |
Former Black Panther activist Angela Davis will speak at
Pomona College on Friday, February 16th at 8 p.m. Davis,
organizer, philosopher and professor, will lecture on “Civil
Rights and Human Rights in Our Democracy.”
Currently, Davis works for prison abolition. She is the
founder of Critical Resistance—a national, grassroots
movement that seeks to dismantle the “prison-industrial
complex,” and she argues for alternatives that are more
effective at reform and more humane to be established. Davis
is professor of the history of consciousness at the
University of California, Santa Cruz and is Presidential
Chair at the University of California.
In 1970 Davis was thrust into the spotlight when she was
linked to the murder of a judge during an attempted Black
Panther prison break. A fugitive for two months, Davis fled
California and an intense manhunt, before being captured in
New York City and charged for conspiracy, kidnapping and
homicide. Eighteen months after her capture, Davis was tried
and acquitted of all charges in one of the most famous
trials in U.S. history.
The lecture will be held in Bridges Hall of Music (150 E.
Fourth St., Claremont) and admission costs $5. This event is
sponsored by the Associated Students of Pomona College (ASPC).
