25th
Annual Woodford-Eckis Lectureship Brings Prominent
Geologists to Pomona College |
 |
Technology in geology research is the focus of the 25th
Annual Pomona College Woodford-Eckis Lecture series to be
held on February 23 and 24. Dr. Sorena Sorensen, a research
associate with the Smithsonian Institute’s American Museum
of Natural History, will lecture on “Jade Hunting in
Subduction Zone Metamorphic Terrains and the
Cathodoluminescence Laboratory.” Dr. Matthew Fouch,
assistant professor of geological sciences at Arizona State
University, will lecture on “Exploring Earth’s Interior from
the Field through the Transportable Seismic Array
Revolution.”
Sorensen, who will give her talk on February 23 at 8:15 p.m,
focuses her research on rock compositions and their mineral
assemblages in order to understand the transformations of
both in the Earth’s crust, particularly subduction zones and
volcanic arcs. One of her specialties is the geochemistry of
jadeitites (jadeite jade) and eclogites (metamorphosed
basalt) from subduction zone metamorphic terrains. A
graduate of the Pomona Class of 1978, Sorensen is an expert
in the use of cathodoluminescence, a laboratory process used
to examine jade and other metamorphic rocks. She is a member
of the editorial review boards of the Journal of
Petrology and the Journal of Metamorphic Geology.
Fouch, who will lecture on February 24 at 11 a.m., will
discuss how a seismologist can discern specific elements of
the earth’s structure and composition from field research
and laboratory analysis. His primary research focuses on the
lithosphere (the first 60 miles below the earth’s crust) and
the seismological technologies available to explore this
terrain. A graduate of the Pomona Class of 1993, Fouch is
the author or co-author of more than 20 papers published in
peer-reviewed journals, such as Science,
Geophysical Research Letters and Earth and Planetary
Science Letters.
Both lectures are open to the public and free of charge.
They will be held in the Pomona College Smith Campus Center,
Rose Hills Theater,170 E. Sixth St., Claremont. For more
information call (909) 621-8675.
The annual Woodford-Eckis Lectureship of Pomona College’s
Geology Department was established in 1980, by Mr. and Mrs.
Rollin P. Eckis to honor Prof. A.O. Woodford, Rollins’
mentor at Pomona. Woodford taught at his alma mater from
1913-1955, initiating the geology department in 1922. One of
the greats of geology, he turned out many outstanding
geologists, including Eckis, Pomona Class of 1927, who spent
most of his career in the petroleum geology field, retiring
as executive vice president of ARCO. Eckis also served on
the Pomona College Board of Trustees from 1958-1977.
Pomona College, one of the nation’s premier liberal arts
institutions, offers a comprehensive program in the arts,
humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Its
hallmarks include small classes, close relationships between
students and faculty, and a range of opportunities for
student research. For more information on Pomona College,
