Award-Winning Poet Cole Swensen To Give Reading at
Pomona College
|

Cole Swensen, award-winning poet and translator, will give a
reading of her work, at Pomona College, on Feb. 24. Her most
recent volume of poetry, Goest (2004), was a finalist
for the National Book Award.
The event, which is part of the Pomona College English
Department’s Literary Series, begins at 7:30 p.m. and will
be held in the Ena Thompson reading room in Crookshank Hall
(140 W. Sixth St., Claremont). The event is free and open to

Her other works include: Such Rich Hour (2001); Oh
(2000); Try (1999), which won the Iowa Poetry Prize;
Noon (1997), which won the New American Poetry Series Award;
Numen (1995); Park (1991); New Math
(1988), which won the National Poetry Series Competition;
and It’s Alive, She Says (1984).
Swensen is also a translator of contemporary French fiction,
art criticism, and poetry. She won the 2004 PEN USA Award
for Translation for Jean Frémon’s Island of the Dead
(2003). Other works she has translated include: OXO
(2004, by Pierre Alferi); Future, Former, Fugitive
(2003, by Olivier Cadiot); Distant Noise (2003, by
Jean Frémon); Art Poetic (1999, by Olivier Cadiot);
and Natural Gaits (1995, by Pierre Alferi).
A native of the San Francisco Bay area, Swensen received her
B.A. and M.A. from San Francisco State University, and a Ph.
D. in Comparative Literature from the University of
California, Santa Cruz. She was director of the Creative
Writing Program at the University of Denver for several
years and is now on the permanent faculty of the University
of Iowa Writers’ Workshop.
