Symposium on “Vietnam and the Major Powers” To Be Held
at Pomona College, Tuesday, February 21st |

Pomona College will host a symposium on “Vietnam and the
Major Powers” on Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at 4:15 p.m. in
room 208 of the Smith Campus Center (170 E. Sixth St.,
Claremont).
The program will focus on Vietnam’s contemporary relations
with the major powers in Asia and the United States. The
speakers include David Arase and David Elliott, of Pomona
College; Arthur Rosenbaum of Claremont McKenna College; and
Quang Minh Pham, a professor of International Studies at
Vietnam National University-Hanoi.
Arase is an expert on East Asian security relations and
economic cooperation and an associate professor of politics
at Pomona College. He is the author of Buying Power: The
Political Economy of Japanese Foreign Aid (1995) and
editor of the book Japan’s Development Assistance
(2005).
Elliott is the H. Russell Professor of International
Relations and a professor of politics at Pomona. A leading
expert on the Vietnam War and asian security Issues, he is
the author of the widely praised volume The Vietnamese
War: Revolution and Social Change in the Mekong Delta.
Rosenbaum is an associate professor of East Asian history
and chair of the Asian Studies Department at Claremont
McKenna College, where he teaches courses on Modern Chinese
History and Asia in the Modern Era.
Quang Minh Pham will serve as a presentation discussant and
offer concluding remarks. Pham comes to Pomona College as
part of a year-long Vietnam Exchange Program grant from the
Luce Foundation/ALCS.
