Pomona College Lecture on Religious Violence in the Pacific Basin

Mark Juergensmeyer, a member of the United Nations Committee on International Terrorism, will give a lecture at Pomona College on “Religious Violence in the Pacific Basin: The Global Connections” on Thursday, March 8.

Juergensmeyer has published more than two hundred articles and twenty books, including: A Handbook of Global Religions (editor, 2006); Religion in Global Civil Society (editor, 2005) Terror in the Mind of God: The Global Rise of Religious Violence (2003) and The Next Cold War: Religious Nationalism Confronts the Secular State (1993). Juergensmeyer is also the director of the UC Santa Barbara Global Studies Program.

As an expert on religious violence, conflict resolution and South Asian religion and politics, he will examine the role of terrorism and religious violence among the Asian diaspora; why violence in this region takes place in the name of religion; and how can it be understood, confronted, and perhaps avoided.

Since September 11, 2001 Juergensmeyer has been a frequent commentator in the news media, including CNN, NBC, CBS, BBC, NPR, Fox News, ABC's Politically Incorrect, and CNBC's Dennis Miller Show.

This event is part of the Pacific Basin Institute at Pomona College lecture series “Asian Diasporas: Neither East Nor West.” The lecture begins at 4:15 p.m., followed by a reception in room 101 of the Hahn Building (420 N. Harvard Ave., Claremont). For further information, call: (909) 607-8065.
