Author
Charles Baxter To Give Reading at Pomona College |
 |
Fiction writer Charles Baxter, author of The Feast of
Love (2000) and, most recently, Saul and Patsy
(2004), will give a reading and discuss his work at Pomona
College on Thursday, March 9 as part of the Pomona College
English Literary Series.
The event begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Ena Thompson Reading
Room in Crookshank Hall (Room 108, 140 W. Sixth St.,
Claremont). It is free and open to the public. For more
information, contact the Pomona College Department of
English at (909) 607-2212.
Known as a “writer’s writer,” Baxter is the author of four
novels, four short story collections, three collections of
poetry, and a collection of essays on fiction. A Guggenheim
Fellow, he has received numerous awards for his work,
including the Award for Literature from the Academy of Arts
and Letters in 1997. His Feast of Love was a finalist
for the National Book Award in Fiction in 2000.
As observed by Publisher’s Weekly, Baxter’s “special gift is
to catch the exact pitch of a dozen voices in an astutely
observed group of contemporary men and women, yet retain an
authorial presence capable of the most exquisite shadings of
emotion and passion, longing and regret.” He is known for
being humorously incisive and quietly profound, as well as
for the critical eye with which he approaches the rules of
writing.
Baxter is currently the Edelstein-Keller Professor of
Creative Writing at the University of Minnesota has taught
at the University of Michigan and Wayne State University.
Pomona College, one of the nation’s premier liberal arts
