Award-Winning Author to Lecture on Renowned Feminist
Artist Judy Chicago |
 |
Gail Levin, award-winning author, will present a lecture on
her new book Becoming Judy Chicago (2007), a
biography and cultural history of the ground-breaking
artist, feminist and intellectual. This event will be held
at Pomona College on Thursday, March 8 at 7 p.m.
Judy Chicago, known for her breakthrough feminist paintings,
such as The Dinner Party, pioneered a program at Fresno
State College in the 1970s to help young women become
artists. Among the skills she taught her students was
carpentry so they could build their own studio and she
inspired them to create art out of their own experiences.
The New York Times praised Becoming Judy Chicago as
“...a work of large scope and wide research — as well as
beautiful illustrations. It brings alive a body of work and
an unironic era that seem very far away.” Susan Fisher
Sterling of the National Museum of Women in the Arts
describes the book as "a fascinating confluence of biography
and cultural history inspired by personal aspiration,
radical politics, avant-garde art, and the Women's
Movement."
Levin is also an art historian, curator, and currently a
professor of art history, American Studies, and Women's
Studies at Baruch College and the Graduate Center of the
City University of New York. Levin is a recognized authority
on the American artist Edward Hopper, about whom she has
written several books, including the award-winning Edward
Hopper: An Intimate Biography (1998). It was named a
New York Times Notable Book and was a finalist for the
Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Her other publications
include a co-edited anthology on Ethics and the Visual
Arts (2006) and Aaron Copland: A Cultural Perspective
(2000), with Judith Tick.
This lecture is sponsored by the Department of Art and Art
History at Pomona College and will be held in Lebus Court
113 (145 E. Bonita Ave., Claremont). It is free and open to
the public. Copies of Levin's Becoming Judy Chicago will be
available for purchase and signing after the lecture. For
more information, call: (909) 607-2253.
