“Environmentalism and Social Justice” Subject of Pomona College Lecture
|
 |
On Wednesday, March 12, at 4:15 p.m., Michael Dorsey will
address the topic "The Challenge of Real Change:
Environmentalism and Social Justice On Campus and Beyond.”
Dorsey, who served two terms as the first African American
and youngest ever director of the Sierra Club, is an
assistant professor in Dartmouth College’s Environmental
Studies Program.
One of the goals of Prof. Dorsey's visit is to inspire
Pomona College’s approach to sustainability such that a
diverse group of faculty, staff and students will understand
and engage in the College's green initiative. The talk is
open to the community and will be held in the Rose Hills
Theater of the Smith Campus Center (170 E. 6th St.,
Claremont).
Dorsey is a co-contributor of the recently released volume
Climate Change, Carbon Trading and Civil Society:
Negative Returns on South African Investments (Rozenberg
Press, South Africa, 2007). As an undergraduate at the
University of Michigan, Dorsey joined then-Vice President Al
Gore and the U.S. Delegation at the Earth Summit in Brazil.
From 1994 to 1996, he was a task force member of President
Clinton’s Council on Sustainable Development. Presently, as
an advisor to Palau’s UN Ambassador and a small group of
island nations, he is helping to build the organization
Islands First.
Dorsey was born and raised in Detroit. His research takes
him to Ecuador several times each year where he studies the
impact of biopiracy on indigenous people. He received his
PhD from the University of Michigan’s School of Natural
Resources & Environment where he worked under the guidance
of Dr. Bunyan Bryant, a leading environmental justice
scholar.
