College Presents Annual Ena H. Thompson Lecture Series:
“Film, Race, and History”

“Film, Race, and History” is the focus of the 2007 Ena H.
Thompson Lecture Series at Pomona College. From April 4-7
award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson and pioneering
historian David Roediger will be on campus for a week of
talks, film screenings, discussions and other events that
will explore how U.S. society has grappled with some of its
most vexing social issues.
Stanley Nelson is one of the preeminent film directors of
documentaries on African American history. A MacArthur
Foundation "Genius" Fellowship winner, his work regularly
appears in festivals, theaters and on PBS.
David Roediger is a historian of race and labor in the U.S.
His work on whiteness and class has advanced an entire field
of historical and critical race studies. The author of eight
books—including the forthcoming Race Making Nation: How
Race Survived United States History—and dozens of
articles, he is a professor of history and African American
studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
