National
Book Award Finalist Sarah Shun-Lien Bynum To Give
Reading at Pomona College
|
 |
Author Sarah Shun-Lien Bynum, a National Book Award finalist
for her novel Madeleine is Sleeping, will present a
reading of her work on Tuesday, April 3 at 7:30 p.m., as
part of Pomona College’s 2006-07 Literary Series.
Part fairy tale, part coming-of-age story, Madeleine is
Sleeping follows the real and surreal adventures of a girl
from a small French village who falls into a triangle of
desire and love.
Publishers Weekly described Bynum’s book as “replete
with Kafkaesque metamorphoses, Freudian fantasies, Aesopian
justice and religious metaphor, the novel is equal parts
fairy tale, fable, romance and bildungsroman." Readers
“looking for a challenging, unusual read will be thrilled by
the imagination and mysterious energy that haunt this
remarkable debut.” The Christian Science Monitor
reviewed her work as “like a dream, this novel fills the
mind with tantalizing ambiguity, haunting images, and
innocent longings that are slow to fade."
A graduate of Brown University and the Iowa Writers’
Workshop, Bynum’s fiction has appeared in the Georgia
Review, Alaska Quarterly Review, and The Best
American Short Stories 2004. She is associate professor
of writing at the University of California, San Diego.
The event will be held at the Ena Thompson Reading Room in
Crookshank Hall (Room 108, 140 W. Sixth St., Claremont). For
further information, call (909) 607-2212.
