I’m
No Angel: The Blonde in Fiction and Film Author to
Give Reading at Pomona College
|
 |
Ellen Tremper will give a reading and lead a discussion of
her book, I’m No Angel: The Blonde in Fiction and Film
(2006, University of Virginia Press), on Thursday, April 5
at 4:15 p.m. at Pomona College.
There are the ubiquitous “dumb blonde” jokes about women.
There is Ivanhoe’s “flaxen Saxon” love, Rowena. What about
Marilyn Monroe? In Tremper’s engaging book she appeals to an
audience interested in literary and cinematic
representations of the blonde. Tremper shows how the
fairy-tale blonde – placid and pliant – evolved into the
“tomato upstairs,” like Monroe in The Seven-Year Itch. The
author also considers the possible end of blonde dominance.
Publishers Weekly writes that Tremper’s, “work
explores a complex character with thoroughness and verve.”
Michael Cunningham, author of The Hours, comments, “I'm not
sure whether or not blondes have more fun, but the reader of
this book certainly will."
Tremper is professor and chair of Brooklyn College’s English
department. Specializing in nineteenth- and
twentieth-century British poetry and fiction, Tremper has
published many articles on Henry James, Virginia Woolf, and
children's literature and is the author of Who Lived at
Alfoxton? Virginia Woolf and English Romanticism (1998).
The event will be held at the Ena Thompson Reading Room in
Crookshank Hall (Room 108, 140 W. Sixth St., Claremont). For
further information, call (909) 607-2212.
