Pianist
Robert Satterlee to Premier Rzewski’s “Second Hand, or
Alone at last” in Pomona College Performance |
 |
Accomplished and versatile pianist Robert Satterlee will
present a recital of music by distinguished American
composer Frederic Rzewski on Saturday, April 1, at 8 p.m. in
the Pomona College Bridges Hall of Music (150 E. Fourth
Street, Claremont).
The concert will feature the world premiere of Rzewski’s
“Second Hand, or Alone at Last,” described as “six
novelettes for piano, left hand,” which was commissioned by
the Meet the Composer organization. The concert will also
include Rzewski’s “Four Pieces for Piano” and “De Profundis,
for speaking pianist.” Rzewski, best known for his set of
variations for solo piano titled “The People United Will
Never Be Defeated,” was a founder, in the mid-sixties, of
the MEV (Musica Elettronica Viva) group, which quickly
became known for its pioneering work in live electronics and
improvisation. Bringing together both classical and jazz
avant-gardists (like Steve Lacy and Anthony Braxton), MEV
developed an esthetic of music as a spontaneous collective
process. Since then, many of Rzewski’s works have featured
overtly political and improvisational elements. Rzewski’s
largest-scale work to date is The Triumph of Death
(1987-8), a two-hour oratorio based on texts adapted from
Peter Weiss' 1965 play Die Ermittlung (The Investigation).
Satterlee, an incisive and imaginative pianist, plays
regularly throughout the United States. Music of our time
plays an important role in his performing activity, and he
has given premieres of several works. He has been heard in
radio broadcasts nationwide, most notably on Minnesota
Public Radio, and has participated in many music festivals
including the Aspen Festival, the Banff Centre, the Norfolk
Chamber Music Festival and the Festival at Sandpoint. He
recently performed in Sweden and Holland and has toured with
the group "Bach Four.”
Satterlee has been awarded prizes in many competitions,
among them honors in the St. Louis Symphony Young Artists
Competition. He is a member of the piano faculty of Bowling
Green State University in Ohio and holds degrees in piano
from Yale University, Peabody Conservatory, and the
University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music.
This concert is open to the public, and there is no charge
to attend. The event is sponsored by the Pomona College
Music Department. For more information, contact (909)
