U.N. Consultant to Give Lecture on “Islamic Feminism and the Women’s Movement in the Islamic Republic of Iran”

United Nations gender and development consultant Nayereh Tohidi will give a lecture on “Islamic Feminism and the Women’s Movement in the Islamic Republic of Iran” at Pomona College on Tuesday, April 22, at 4:15 p.m.

Tohidi was a consultant with UNICEF and represented non-governmental organizations (NGOs) at both the 1985 and 1995 World Conferences on Women, in Nairobi and Beijing, respectively, addressing gender issues in Iran and the post-Soviet Caucasus and Central Asia. In 2001, she ran a weekly radio program, “Women and Society in Iran,” broadcast to Iran, Central Asia and Europe through Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

She was an editor and contributor to Women in Muslim Societies: Diversity within Unity (1998) and Globalization, Religion and Gender: the Politics of Women’s Rights in Catholic and Muslim Contexts (2001).

Tohidi currently teaches at California State University, Northridge, chairing the gender and women’s studies department, and is a research associate at the Center for Near Eastern Studies at UCLA.

The lecture will be held in the Pomona College Hahn Building (Room 101, 420 N. Harvard Ave., Claremont). For further information, call Pardis Mahdavi at (909) 607-7854 or e-mail pardis.mahdavi@pomona.edu.

This is the third lecture in the Pomona College Anthropology Department’s 2008 Distinguished Lecture Series: “Iran: Axis of Culture.” This event is co-sponsored by the Pacific Basin Institute at Pomona College; the Departments of Gender and Women's Studies, History, Politics, and Religious Studies; and the Public Events Committee.
