Pomona College Lecture on “Why We Need to Recast the Debate on Immigration”

Award-winning sociologist Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo will discuss “Why We Need to Recast the Debate on Immigration,” on Thursday, April 24th at 7 p.m. at Pomona College.

Hondagneu-Sotelo teaches sociology at the University of Southern California and researches the intersections of gender and Mexican immigration. In 2001 she wrote, Doméstica: Immigrant Workers Cleaning and Caring in the Shadows of Affluence, which won the following awards:
  • 2001 C. Wright Mills Award, Society for the Study of Social Problems;
  • 2002 Max Weber Award, American Sociological Association (ASA) Section on Organizations, Occupations and Work;
  • 2002 Distinguished Contribution to Research, ASA Latina/o Section;
  • 2002 Distinguished Book Award, ASA Sex and Gender Section;
  • 2002 Distinguished Scholarship Award, Pacific Sociological Association;
  • 2003 Phi Kappa Phi Faculty Recognition Award, USC.
Her current research includes the role of religion in immigrant rights movements and how community activists have responded to the post-9/ 11 backlash against Muslim Americans, Arab Americans and immigrants in general, focusing on these groups’ various struggles.

This event will be held at Pomona College’s Pearsons Hall (Room 101, 551 N. College Ave., Claremont) and is part four in the Pomona College W.O.R.D. (Working On Responsible Dialogue) series, “People, Policies, and Politics: Expanding Perspectives on Immigration.” There is no charge for the event, which is open to the public.
