Pomona
College Professor of Politics Awarded $195,000 Mellon
Foundation Grant

Heather Williams, associate professor of politics at Pomona
College, has been awarded the prestigious $195,000 New
Directions Fellowship, an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant.
 With
her Mellon Fellowship, Williams will study how villages
manage land and water resources in the Lake Titicaca region,
divided between Peru and Bolivia. Williams will also examine
how individuals, kin networks and municipalities respond to
scarcity, and she aims to understand how—and under what
circumstances—people are able to sustainably regulate water
and land resources. Williams will obtain training in
environmental and watershed science to aid in her project.
Williams’ areas of expertise include social movements,
global politics of food and agriculture, Latin American
politics, and U.S.-Mexican immigration. She is also the
coordinator of the Latin American Studies Program at the
College.
Mellon New Directions Fellowships, which are given to a
maximum of 10 scholars each year, assist faculty members in
the humanities and social sciences acquire training outside
their own disciplines—permitting excellent scholars to work
on problems that interest them most and encouraging the
highest standards in cross-disciplinary research. Grant
winners are given the equivalent of one academic year’s
salary; two summers of additional support; and, tuition and
other costs associated with the fellows’ training programs.
