Two
Pomona College students named Beckman Scholars |
 |
Pomona College named students Robert Rawle ’08 and Laura
Rosen ’08 Beckman Scholars—awarding research funds to Rawle,
a chemistry major, and Rosen, a molecular biology major, to
work alongside Pomona College professors.
Rawle is working with Cynthia Selassie, professor of
chemistry, on a study of how DNA gets damaged by a class of
compounds known as phenols. Rosen is working with Lenny
Seligman, professor of biology, to characterize a
DNA-binding protein involved in gene regulation.
The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation makes grants to
foster the invention of methods, instruments, and materials
that will open up new avenues of research in science. The
Beckman Scholars Program provides scholarships that advance
the education, research training and personal development of
select sophomores or juniors majoring in chemistry,
molecular biology, or biology. The program awards recipients
a total of $19,300 for two summers and one academic year of
undergraduate research activity. This scholarship recognizes
and enables unusually talented undergraduates who plan to
pursue a career in scientific research or in medicine
(Ph.D., M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. programs).
Pomona College is one of the nation’s premier liberal arts
institutions, offering a comprehensive program in the arts,
humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Its
hallmarks include small classes, close relationships between
students and faculty, and a range of opportunities for
student research. Visit Pomona College on the web at
