Goldwater Fellowships Awarded to Pomona College Students |
 |
Pomona College students Robert B. Foresman and Grace C. Wu,
both members of the Class of 2008, have been awarded the
Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, which covers the cost of
tuition, fees, books, room and board up to a maximum of
$7,500 per year.
This year 317 college sophomores and juniors were selected,
on the basis of academic merit, from a field of more than
1,100 students. Honoring former Senator Barry M. Goldwater,
the scholarship program was designed to encourage
outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics,
natural sciences and engineering and provide a continuing
source of highly qualified individuals to those fields of
academic study and research.
Foresman, a resident of Del Mar, is a physics major who
plans to pursue a Ph.D. in quantum physics. His ultimate
goal is to conduct research in that area at a research
institution.
Wu, a resident of Hacienda Heights, is a double major in
biology and history. She plans to earn a Ph.D. in biology
followed by a career teaching at a liberal arts college and
conducting research on insect physiology or phylogenetic
systematics.
Pomona College, one of the nation’s premier liberal arts
institutions, offers a comprehensive program in the arts,
humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Its
hallmarks include small classes, close relationships with
faculty and a range of opportunities for student research.
